Crash Numbers Down Says ICBC

Monday, June 1, 2015 @ 3:50 AM

Prince George, B.C.- The number of crashes in Prince George dropped  in  2013 ( the latest  available stats) according to ICBC.

The stats indicate the number of crashes  has  slipped from a high of 4,800  in 2011 to 3,940 in 2013.

The  drop in crashes also means  a reduction in  injured  victims.   There were  930 injured  in 2013,   down from 1330 in 2011.

The number of crashes involving pedestrians dropped by more than a third  in 2013 to sit at 20,  down from  a  high of 35 in  2010.  Of course, the stats  do not take into  account the five  pedestrian fatalities which  occurred over the 2014/2015 winter.   Prince George RCMP have advised they will be   watching pedestrian and driver behaviour over the next few weeks to ensure  everyone is  obeying the rules of the road.

The stats also  show that while ICBC paid out  $817 thousand dollars in 2013  for  road  improvements,  that  is down from the $883,00 spent in 2010  for improvements  to roads in the  north central  part of the province.

I guess that is a good enough reason for them to have raised our rates…

the liberals take money from everywhere to “balance” the budget…ICBC is one of their gold mines

True enough! But the NDP did the same. For instance, that is how BCRail carried a debt of more than 600 million. They raided BCHydro and BCFerries as well. Not to mention ICBC, which was originally brought in by the NDP and Dave Barrett! Now it is a handy “gold mine” for the Liberals. Would private insurance only be better?

2013? Is that correct?

bcracer. don’t understand where you’re coming from. My rates keep going down.

We talked about this on the Ahbau story, but I’d like to expand. When ICBC makes money, it flows to the government as a dividend, and I get that, the government will get it from somewhere, if not ICBC, then from raising taxes. But then, when ICBC has a bad year, the reserve they had is gone, so they raise rates. The problem is this may be affecting driver behavior. No matter how much we behave, our rates just keep on climbing. An analogy is like having 3 children, and no matter how hard two of them work to keep their rooms clean, the other one just comes and strews their clothes all over the floor. It isn’t long, before the other two don’t give a crap either.

If we seen consistently falling insurance premiums, because of better driving habits, you might even see social pressure on drivers who act like idiots. But the current system is ICBC is a form of taxation. If even a small percentage of drivers weary of increasing rates, and take a “what does it matter attitude”, it becomes a self defeating system.

And finally, I find it ironic that if you are killed by a reckless driver, there’s a 6 hour accident investigation and the reckless driver might do a week of time. If you’re shot in a drug deal, there’s a massive investigation and the shooter does serious time – and yet in both cases, you are dead. But in the first case, if there was serious police enforcement on the roads, you might be alive.

Society seems to be willing to tolerate reckless drivers and yet use a hammer when it comes to drug activity.

Well said.

A link to the ICBC website the shows increases in insurance premiums (surcharges) for having pervious at fault accident claims, and insurance permiums decreases (discounts) for claims free drivers.

Princegeorge, NDP hasn’t been the ruling party in over a decade…let it go dude.. And just because both parties do it or have done it doesn’t make it right..

Why do people always bring up the old NDP when trying to make all the crap the liberals are doing okay? What percentage of your income tax went to the province when the NDP where in power? What percentage do we okay now that the liberals are in..? Must be the ndps fault for the rise somehow….lol
