May Produced Lots of Lightning
Prince George, B.C.- There was plenty of lightning recorded in B.C. over the past month.
Environment Canada meteorologist Andre Besson says when it come to lightning strikes in May, there were 67 thousand “That is 500% of normal for lightning strikes, so that’s very substantial.” There were a further 39 thousand lightning flashes recorded by Environment Canada.
Besson explains the reason for the increased activity “Basically, conditions are much warmer than normal, and we’ve had an upper trough of low pressure that was basically fairly stationary over the interior of British Columbia for quite a few days over the month of May. And that lightning strike ability, combined with the warm temperatures, helped create more thunderstorm activity, so fairly unsettled throughout the month of May.”
With scattered showers expected through to Thursday, Besson says there is also a risk of thunderstorms each day and that means June will be off to an electric start.
