New Cargo Facility Under Construction at YXS

Prince George, B.C. – It may well be the last piece of the puzzle in making the Prince George Airport a cargo handling facility. A new, $5.5 million dollar cargo warehouse project, that will be paid for by the revenue collected from tenants is expected to be ready before the end of this year.
“We’ve got the approval for international cargo from a waste stand point ( handling garbage from international flights) that was stopping us from becoming a truly International Airport” says YXS CEO John Gibson . ” We’ve got CBSA (Cabnada Border Services), we’re working with them to make them a component in the building, we’re designated as a tech stop airport from the Fedeal Government, China’s designated us as one of their 12 cities in Canada to operate in to, so it’s really promising. Most of our target right now is in Chinese operators, and they just won’t come here without a cargo facility.” He says they have it in writing, “plain and simple they will not come here without a cargo facility.” Building a cargo facility is the last major hurdle says Gibson.
With a business case prepared by Initiatives Prince George, a loan was secured for the construction of the warehouse. Gibson says he expects the warehouse will be used for the shipping of goods that need a quick turnaround,”It’s live cattle shipments, it’s cherries, it’s seafood, and we also know right now, we are having a fair amount of industrial goods that are coming into this region and need a cargo facility to be handled.”
When complete, the 25 thousand square feet cargo warehouse will have 11 truck doors, 3 ground level doors and one ramp accessible door.
The cargo facility has been on the Airport’s wish list for more than a decade says Gibson, “There was no speculative money out there, so with no speculative money e couldn’t have a ‘build it and they will come’ project, So it’s been working with trying to come up with anchor tenants and some other tenants who can fill the 25 thousand square feet that we’ll have. We feel we are at the point that we can do that.”
Gibson says further announcements will be forthcoming this summer on who will be the anchor tenant for the facility.”If we can build the cargo facility based on the tenants that will be in it, then it isn’t required for the big airplanes to pay for the facility but it now facilitates getting big airplanes.”
While the foundation work is complete, the buildings framework will be assembled early next month and the facility is expected to be complete in November of this year.

I see they are still under illusions of grandeur.
They really need to get it that those planes that fly over at 20,000 feet with contrails behind, ARE NOT GOING TO BE LANDING HERE any time soon.
But I guess they have to try and justify their jobs somehow.
Is this necessary, maybe, down the road….sort of like the runway….nothing has landed here that needed the extension, nor can they show anything that size will be landing here in the near or even not so distant future..
if I am wrong, show me!
Cue the short sighted boo birds. You know who you are.
Diversification requires diversified infrastructure . Good on you PG . This is what is needed.
“if I am wrong, show me!”
You have given an opinion. Others will have opinions as well. Some are obviously acting on their opinions and have acted on their opinions as can be seen by this and many other pictures from the airport and its surroundings.
As far as showing that an opinion is wrong, that is impossible to do right now since it requires inside knowledge and the authority to make that knowledge public. It will be seen in due time, which may now be shorter than many of us think.
As they say, Rome was not built in a day.
Great for the airport. Storage is always good… I am sure it will be well used and a definite benifit to PG air travel.. Who knows.. it may even be used by local companies when they need storage space.
Interesting that IPG is credited for preparing the business case. It is a rare occasion when they are given credit for something like that. That comes at an interesting time.
Well bcracer, they sure wouldn’t be landing here if the runway was too short, would they?
I wish everything could happen on your timeline, but things don’t always work that way.
You should probably start working on your complaints now for when they planes do finally come. What will it be? Too noisy? Don’t like the colour of the planes?
“You should probably start working on your complaints now for when they planes do finally come.”

They’re not coming. Ever. There is no logistical reason whatsoever to have a stopover in Prince George. Maybe there was 40 years ago when they first came up with this idea but not now. Prince George is not a hub anymore. It hasn’t been a hub for a very long time.
What about cheaper fuel…av gas is costly. But with the Canadian dollar in the dumps it may make it worth it.. As for the runway, it was extended years ago fir the big planes. They can land here if they want to now.
I posted an old 250 link yesterday that shows that this was started when Tim McEwan was head of IPG. Heather Ohland likely found the plan under the stack of phone books on her chair that she uses to try to fill Tim’s seat, dusted it off out of pure embarrassment when the airport authority moved forward on their own. Seems that a sucessful quarter for the current IPG is to get a millwright AND an electrician to move here.

This would be a great first project for the soon to be new MP Todd Doherty to champion for the people in his riding and surrounding district. And good on Todd’s former employer for moving forward….you will never know if you don’t try!
PG is on a more direct flight path to the US from parts of Asia so does have a leg up on Anchorage if they could pry some tech stops away from them.
Ha, I don’t know who is stupider, the yxs believing they will ship Cherries and seafood out of Prince George, or the boneheads that loaned them the money. The only smart person is the contractor that is building it.
So, your going to truck fresh seafood from Rupert to Prince George and then send it too Asia. Your going to ship cherries from the Okanagon to Prince George and then fly it to China. Shipping live Cattle to China, sure hate to be the ones cleaning up the warehouse on that one. Why live cattle???, butcher them send it frozen, way more cost effective. Something just don’t make sense. Our products are not that special to warrant the cost of flying it over.
I guess the only thing logistic about this site, is the name of the park.
bcracer states; “if I am wrong, show me!”; with respect to international Chinese cargo planes “not” landing here anytime soon.
gopg2015; “As far as showing that an opinion is wrong, that is impossible to do right now since it requires inside knowledge and the authority to make that knowledge public.”
Challenge accepted, with respect to supporting bcracer’s opinion: I think depending on the “word” of a country like China is foolhardy. This country has been very wrong, multiple times, on both population growth, and the need / demand for urban living; ENTIRE cities have been built with virtually no one living in them. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the “Ghost” Chinese city of Kangbashi (formerly called Ordos) as just one example:
http: //static5.businessinsider.com/image/5395f35f6bb3f70e0995212d-960/kang-3.jpg
According to Business Insider (a very reputable publication); “Schmitz points out that one of the key differences between visiting Ordos now and back in October 2010 was people’s attitudes. Back in 2010, residents of Kangbashi (new city of Ordos) were defensive when the place was dubbed a ghost city, but now many had come to accept it.”

So, is bcracer wrong in his opinion that Chinese cargo planes will never use the expanded Prince George airport facilities? I believe I have submitted some evidence that supports his opinion; the likelihood that the expanded runway, the global logistics park, and this new cargo handling facility, becoming “Ghost facilities” is not at all improbable.
Chinese culture is rich with games of gamble like Mahjong, and it looks to me like we are playing China’s game. Tens of million dollars, of our money, being invested in a gamble; but isn’t that what international business speculation is about?

from the link…..”Takeda delivers live Dungeness crab to China.”…..maybe they ask the little buggers to swim to Beijing:)
“In 2013, B.C. shipped 450 tonnes to China,” says David Geen, chair of the market access committee for the B.C Cherry Association. “We expect to double or even quadruple that amount this coming season.”
My question is this, will there be a bonded warehouse facility for customs clearance of inbound “in bond goods”? If the answer is no then it’s all just academic.
A few points need to be cleared up for everyone to get a clear understanding about YXS.
1) Runway was enhanced post 911 to accommodate “emergency force downs” of larger aircraft. Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver and Abbotsford were at maximum capacity.
2) The airport “YXS” is for the most part is “insecure”, lacking the proper perimeter security, video surveillance to ensure the airport is secure by most international carrier requirements.
3) No “inbond” warehousing for customs clearance shipments. All inbond needs to land in Vancouver for customs clearance currently as no secured warehouse exists at the Prince George Airport.
@Professional
Mid to longer term goal imo is to have an inland foreign trade zone like the one in Winnipeg, but get building #1 up as an initial step.
centreportcanada.ca/about-us
If it’s not going to be used for the next 5-10 years, wonder if they’ll let me store my plane and boat in there…….
Maybe Clint Dahl can build another dream hotel, when this warehouse is abandoned and empty, in 5 years?
Wow… so for years we have been sold the build it and they will come senario for huge international courier jets needing additional runway length to land and take off, and now we have Proffesional stating; “Runway was enhanced post 911 to accommodate “emergency force downs” of larger aircraft. Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver and Abbotsford were at maximum capacity.”
What a load of garbage!!! But hey folks, lets keep voting in the people who approve spending our money on nothing more than a wing and a prayer!
“As they say, Rome was not built in a day.”
Nope… but it did burn to the ground in six days, while Nero fiddled.
Yea far better to vote for a washed up retread party hack who can’t even get one of eight seats up for grabs at the council table even in an election where three incumdents are given the boot. Yet they think they are the one to represent the entire area?
Hespoke , the live crab out of Rupert , Stewart and kitimat trucks out to YVR . Some east . Not all cattle being shipped are for the table . Rupert would be great because shipping in avgas would be way cheaper than shipping from Edmonton to George but they don’t have the airport that George has . The cherries thing makes sense too . Just ask any long hauler , would you rather drive from the OK to YVR or OK to PG ? You need a globe and a piece of string to see why PG is in the sweet spot .
I should have added . Live crab , hence the urgency . If they were to fly out of pg instead of YVR then they would be out faster ,only half as beat up , ten hours give or take fresher and worth a great deal more money . Win, win . It’s a staggering amount of crab .
SS …. read Neil’s editorial in the Citizen today about predictions. You make an argument based on just another opinion. Economists, city planners, meteorologists, politicians, you name it, they all make predictions and most back up their predictions with some reasonable arguments.
You can’t prove the future until it happens. Then those who can say “I told you so will step up and be recognized if they are still alive or still care. They others who were wrong will simply shut up and sometimes fade away.
Then there are those who, when a prediction someone else made comes true, will argue that it did, but just you wait, it is still early. LOL
Professional. Your last two points all deal with things which do not exist at YXS.
At one time YXS did not exist. They built it and it now exists. They have kept on building ever since.
It does not take great expertise to not only build security fences and make buildings secure and also hire staff that can maintain a building and compound secure.
I am not understanding why you think you have made an argument with those statements.
“it did burn to the ground in six days, while Nero fiddled”
Almost 1950 years later the nasty tales of those who did not like Nero still persist.
1. There were no fiddles then. He played a Lyre
2. He was actually 35 miles away in Antium when the fire broke out. He let his palace be used as a shelter.
3. The fire began in the slums. The area’s homes burned very quickly and was spread by high winds. The fire raged out of control for almost three days. Three of Rome’s 14 districts were completely wiped out. Four were untouched The entire City did not burn down. Hundreds died in the fire and thousands were left homeless.
BTW, the great Chicago Fire of October 1871 was not started by a cow that kicked over a lantern. A Chicago Republican reporter admitted he made up the story to add some colour to it.
So much for history. Or his story.
The Airport Runway was officially opened in February 2009. So six years later, and nothing has happened. Hmmmm.
The fact of the matter is no business wanted to build a warehouse at YXS because there is no business case to support it. The Airport Authority can build it because they will use funds collected from people who fly out of Prince George, ie; Airport Improvement Fee. Which is $20.00 each time you fly out. Gross per year for YXS is approx. $3 Million.
So they will build the warehouse and hope to rent it to tenants to help pay off the money that they will have to borrow from Northern Initiative Trust, which incidently YXS still owes $11 Million for their share of the cost of the runway expansion.
So once again big time plans for expansion paid for by the Citizens of Prince George, and little or no hope for any return on this investment.
People should keep in mind that a 25000 sq ft warehouse is small by anyones standard, so don’t get too excited about this piddly assed building,.
Also keep in mind that they hope to rent this space to tenants. If they do is there any guarantee that these tenants will be in the import export business????
From BC Government website.
In July 2011 Canada’s first dedicated cargo flights to Mainland China began from YVR to Shanghai. The three-times-per-week flights typically deliver BC seafood and could also carry cherries and other fresh goods. BC has set record exports of agrifood products to China in each of the last three years, with exports topping $100 Million for the first time ever in 2010.
Quick Facts:
BC exported about $29 Million worth of cherries in 2010, with over $7.5 Million to Taiwan and $5 Million to Hong Kong.
The top export markets for BC sweet cherries are the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
BC cherry growers employ over 3,000 people during the harvest season.
BC exported a record $118 million of agrifoods to China in 2010
So you can see that YXS is a day late and a dollar short when it comes to exporting products to China.
The idea that PG is more competitive because of its location, is a myth, there are a lot of factors to consider when going into the International Airline Cargo business, and Prince George will never be able to compete on any scale with Anchorage Alaska, Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary, just to name a few.
So that’s what Boundary Rd was for. Easy access to PG’s fine cherry orchards.
It is all perfectly viable. YXS is on the radar of at least one chinese carrier, one of the biggest stumbling blocks is that there is not a secondary runway of sufficient length to appease redundancy stipulations. Using YXS as strictly a refuel stop is totally possible for overseas flights once infrastructure is put in place to meet their regulations. PG is a low volume airport, so refuel turnaround times would make it attractive. Cargo port can be possible too, but lots more will need to happen. Build it and they WILL COME…But can we afford it? Also, return on investment will take a while. Will it happen..who knows. Can it happen..most definately. Myself, I am torn..More noise and air pollution versus economic growth. Time will tell.
gopg2012 states; “You can’t prove the future until it happens.” True, but you can look at the past 6 years, since the runway has been extended, and realize not one international cargo jet has landed at YXS.
Just how long do we have to wait before you, and others like you (watchdog and Dearth), begin to look like Charlie Brown’s brother Linus in that pumpkin patch?

Actually Boundary Rd is an excellent 6 kilometer run, that when you add on the LC Gunn trail run to it and back to town. Then entire run is 21 kilometers, or a half marathon. I am so glad the taxpayer built such a nice road just for moi! Thanks for the kilometer markers, so I can check my splits without checking my Strava app. It makes for a nice quick evening run.
What I am trying to get across to folks is that this airport is only a “regional” airport with the name “international” stuck on it to appease folks. It is not equipped to load and unload large commercial passenger jets let alone cargo jets (well it may be able to do that).
Several factors come into play when you want to play with the big kids, your facility needs to be organized for traffic flow from every perspective (airside and passenger side). YXS is not so configured.
The facility need to be physically secured, electronically monitored and be staffed with the personal to ensure it stays secured.
You want to play big airport you need to be able to unload passengers via overhead walk ways, to portable stairs in minus whatever weather.
You want commercial business you need a customs approved bonded warehouse to clear all inbound and outbound goods, this makes $$$ because you don’t need to ship stuff to Vancouver for clearance it can be done here and flown out “in-bond”. This saves shippers lots of money on moving goods back and forth pending clearance by customs. It can be flown in from where ever and cleared right here then shipped anywhere north it needs to go, saving big dollars for commercial buyers. But short sightedness is what PG is known for, isn’t it?
So don’t hold your breath for any great “Northern Gateway” BS any time soon until someone other than me points these issues out and addresses them in a timely fashion. Silk purse out of a sows ear….
