Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George School Board meets for the final time this year tonight.

Vice-chairperson Brenda Hooker says trustees will try to finalize the structure of the district’s rural education committee “to try and look at solutions and different ways we can support rural education from the board office in our district.”20150303_181750-1

The Board will also update the trustee remuneration policy and will vote on a recommendation brought forth by the Education Programs and Planning Committee to approve a memorandum of understanding between Camosun College and the School District for delivery of the Professional Cook 1 program.

This agreement would give students access to professional cook training that is not currently available to them within the school district.

how about the board look a little deeper than balancing the budget issues, and start look at what is being taught. The standards set by the province is a minimum standard. how about, teaching from grade 9 up, important life skills. Just a few things I can think of.

Expectations from employers.
How to manage money, and investing money.
How to cook a healthy meal.
How to maintain a vehicle, understanding preventative maintenance
How to look at both sides of the streets before crossing,(PGSS and Massey) just had to throw that one in.

It is of my opinion it is important for young people to know a bit about literature, Be able to do basic mathematics in your head. Understand something about chemistry, biology and physics. We don’t have to groom every student to be post secondary material. Some just don’t have the capacity nor the interest, and that is not a bad thing. Just because the parents want them to have a good post secondary, but if it is not in the will of the kid, it wastes their time, parents money, and the post secondary class room space.
