Winnipeg Jets Select Jansen Harkins

Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Cougars centre Jansen Harkins has been drafted by the Winnipeg Jets at the NHL draft in Sunrise Florida today.

He was drafted in the second round, 47th overall. Harkins is coming off a stellar year with the Cougars, scoring 20 goals and adding 59 assists for 79 points.

Harkins also won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the Under 18 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, gold at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, and was chosen to play in this past season’s CHL Top Prospects Game.

“On behalf of our entire ownership group, we are very proud of Jansen and all that he has accomplished to this point in his hockey career,” said Prince George Cougars President, Greg Pocock. “He is a terrific ambassador for our team and our city, and he has demonstrated the necessary work ethic, focus and desire needed to be a professional hockey player.”

And there was more good news for the Cougars organization today as forward Brad Morrison was drafted in the fourth round (113th overall) by the New York Rangers.

Morrision finished his sophomore WHL season with 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 67 games. Cats captain, and defenceman Sam Ruopp was the third Cougar drafted today, going in the fifth round (129th overall) to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

A fourth Cougar, Tate Olson, was selected in the 7th round (210th overall), by the Vancouver Canucks.
