City Asset Survey Better than Expected

Wednesday, July 8, 2015 @ 3:54 AM

Prince George, B.C. – A review of some of the City’s assets, shows they aren’t in as bad condition as had been thought.

In a report to be presented to Prince George City Council this evening,  Frank Blues reports the costs to  upgrade the 7 facilities examined  will be about $12 million dollars,   which is one third of what had been estimated  two years ago.

His report indicates that of the 7 facilities examined, ( the Four Seasons Pool, City Hall,  Coliseum,  Ospika Fire Hall, Bob Harkins Library,  Elksentre and the Aquatic Centre)  it is the Coliseum which  scores the lowest and  is  in need of  $2.89 million dollars in  repairs to  the plumbing and interior finishes.  That is the most expensive repair  among the 7 properties.

The report does note that  roofs of the facilities were not assessed  because of snow cover at the time of inspection and limited access, so the estimates could actually be higher.

Blues’ report says the  dollars for the  repairs and upgrades need to be part of a 10 year investment plan, and that  the  2016 capital  plan will have to be adjusted to account for the upgrades.

Looking at past projections by the city we should double this and add 5.

The roofs have been clear of snow for months so perhaps another look could have been taken and the report amended to include the costs of roof repair/replacement?

Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt the City look at getting rid of the 4 seasons pool just 2 years ago? If memory serves me right, they said that one of the main issues with that pool was the roof. They claimed that the YMCA was interested in taking it off their hands. I would bet that somewhere there is the inspection report that they were basing the info on from 2 years prior. It was around the same time that there was discussion on the possibility of selling the Civic Center too.

The Ospika Fire Hall? What on earth does that need?

Rooves by any other name would still keep the rain out .
