Fort Nelson, B.C. – The Big Beaver Creek fire has closed the Alaska Highway between 386 km and 418 km.

Strong winds in the area have significantly increased fire behaviour on the blaze which has now crossed the Alaska Highway and is over 250 hectares in size.

The highway will be closed in both directions until it is deemed safe for travelling.

Airtankers were called in to assist ground crews however both air support and firefighters were pulled off due to extreme fire activity and safety concerns.

There are currently more than 30 fires burning in the Fort Nelson zone, and over 40 in the Prince George Fire Centre.
