Members of P.G. City Council  join MLA Mike Morris, Shirley Bond and Transportation Minister Todd Stone  to announce Bike  lane  dollars

Prince George, B.C.-  The Province  is putting  $250 thousand dollars  towards  the City of Prince George’s  project to  improve the connectivity of bike lanes in the City.

The dollars will be matched by the City,  and while  no new  lanes will be created,  Councillor Jillian Merrick  is thrilled “Obviously I’m over the moon about it.”

She  says  the  money will  be used  to improve  the near 40 kms of bike lanes in the City .  She says the cycling community has noted the lanes don’t function well “They’re not marked, there’s no signage, people park  in them.  So the funding from the Province, we’re going to use to  upgrade the signage, and marking, and any barriers that may need to be  put in place and Council will be looking at  the parking issue very soon.”

Hopefully the signs will tell the cyclist to use the middle of their lane, not ride on the dividing line.

Yah, but, we have to have people who want to risk their lives by being closer to the distracted driver, impaired, learner, new driver. Yes they have less intelligence, and they don’t understand, that’s why we have a comment section, and hope they’ll read and perhaps wake up. Sorta like the runners who use the bike lanes. (no, you can’t complain about the slanted sidewalks, I run on them just fine)

Porter, I generally agree but I challenge you to walk the bike lane on the last 500 metres of foothills where it meets Chief Lake., never mind ride a bike on it. The pavement is full of deep cracks, potholes, and has been that way for years. There’s a half foot section by the white line that’s rideable. Other areas that I end up near the white line are the bike lanes covered in gravel and garbage – and rarely if ever swept. But absolutely if there’s a unobstructed bike lane, cyclists should use it and not impede traffic flow, when there isn’t an unimpeded bike lane, guess what the MVA allows:

c) must, subject to paragraph (a), ride as near as practicable to the right side of the highway,

3) Nothing in subsection (2) (c) requires a person to ride a cycle on any part of a highway that is not paved.

That white line is usually the part of the road that’s not covered in gravel and other crap. But why can’t I ride on it? Cars drive on it all the time.

Best they put a look out for large holes and uneven surfaces signs on Foothill from chief lake to the dump also should mention of the very large holes on the edge 0f sw corner at Greenwood and north Kelly as well as its twin on north Kelly and Killy rd, drive into these holes and flares will be required to locate you, and yes these holes have been reported.

I think they can start by putting in a proper bike lane and a proper walkway up to the University. I would say it’s just a matter of time before some vehicle jumps the sidewalk and runs over someone.

Last weekend I met two groups of cyclists on Hwy. 97, heading north, riding side-by-side on the shoulder, the outer rider was almost on the line. It was raining hard and with a truck heading south at the time I ended up being quite close to the riders. When traveling at highway speed, even slowing for the conditions, it was very difficult to see these riders. I suggest for safety sake these cyclists ride in single file. Be considerate for vehicular traffic. Your destination will be reached at the same time.

“and while no new lanes will be created, Councillor Jillian Merrick is thrilled “Obviously I’m over the moon about it.” – sigh, and this is what we elected? Get excited the day we raise money for new machines at the hospital, or the pediatrics ward. Does she know how much paint this total investment will cover, once everyone gets their hands on it?

@ Ski,

“But why can’t I ride on it?” You can, but, most drivers will likely risk hitting you on your bike than the oncoming traffic. If you know you are going to encounter crappy road, maybe start riding on tires that handle the loose gravel better. In vehicle vs bicycle, the bicycle will always lose. I been hit by a car, while on a bike, I learned the hard way.

Many drivers feel that cars own the road. It’s not the case. Cyclists have the same rights and in some cases more rights. (Section 183)

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, it is illegal to come closer than 1m to a cyclist. It doesn’t mater what the cyclist is doing or where they are on the road. 1m = 3’4″.

The cyclist is allowed to take the whole driving lane if it’s not safe to be on the right hand side of the road. Not safe includes bad asphalt on the right. (Section 183)

Also, a car/truck is not allowed to pass a cyclist unless they pass at a safe distance. (Section 157)

Porter, that was just a little sarcasm. I use a cross bike to commute for that very reason. It’s capable of riding on gravel. I ride on Chief Lake a lot, and 99.99% of cars give me a decent berth as there is only a narrow shoulder, and in turn, if there’s on coming traffic while someone is overtaking me, I’ll go to gravel and make it easier for all. Truth is, road bikes are a specialty item/toy. If you’re going to ride one, ride it where there’s good shoulders or bike lanes, or very little traffic. Being right and dead is a bummer.

Heck, throw a pair of 8 plys on there, driver through anything LOL

So Jillian, does it upset you when transit buses are parked in the bike lanes ? Catch 22.

Ski, you/re one of the good riders with a lot of common sense.

We should put a golf club in Jillian’s hand, and then she could drum up some money to upgrade Pine Valley Golf Course. When the money comes through she can be **over the moon** about it.

Hey Jillian, how bout no parking signs on Ospika between 15th and 18th? They’re parking in the bike lane.

What will the property tax increase be next year? So far we have 1.1 million for snow removal equipment and 250k for this. 500k is good but it is all for signage?
