Early Election Call Gives Conservatives “Head Start” in PG Ridings
Election signs up for one candidate while the other parties have yet to nominate their candidates – photo 250 News
Prince George, B.C. – The early federal election call has given the Conservatives in the two Prince George ridings the early advantage.
That from UNBC Political Science professor Dr. Gary Wilson, who notes the other parties haven’t even chosen their candidates yet.
“It allows the Conservative candidates, one of who’s an incumbent, the other one is new, it allows them to gain the advantage and hit the ground running in terms of the campaign,” he says. “So they have at least a month head start on the other candidates, which is going to be fairly significant.”
He notes the advantage isn’t insurmountable though. “These are already fairly safe ridings but you never know, we have a new candidate in one of the ridings (Conservative Todd Doherty) and it really depends on who the other parties nominate. If they they can find very credible candidates that are known locally then there’s always an opportunity that those candidates will do well.”
Could the lack of preparedness by the other parties mean they’ve already written the ridings off?
“Well they are fairly safe ridings. If you compare them to other ridings across Canada they’re two of the safest in the country,” says Wilson. “So given the cost of running elections some parties have to do that right? They have to sort of cut their losses in some constituencies. It doesn’t mean to say they’re not going to run candidates but probably the Liberals and NDP will be focusing on ridings where they can have sort of a legitimate, credible shot at winning. And that might not be these ridings.”
He says the cost of running a long campaign could also play a factor in Prince George.
“Absolutely. The fact you have a very, very long campaign and your money is tight compared to the government party you’re going to want to spend that money strategically and some ridings may just not get that type of funding. That money may go to ridings where there’s at least a shot at winning.”
Comments
Always wondered what happened to the candidates that ran last time, do they get dumped by the party if they lose? Why don’t they stick around and make people remember their name? Kiss the odd baby once or twice a year? You don’t need to keep an office, just need to keep your face out there once in a while…
Why am I not surprised that the Libs and NDP still don’t have candidates! Wow, everyone and their dog knew the election was a fixed date and the possibility that Harper could drop the writ early. Once again, both are not prepared, clearly they have no plan and certainly not ready to lead our country.
Advantage? How many stupid signs do they need on the bypass? It’s about the tackiest thing I’ve ever seen
Are there still a few people out there whose final decision is influenced by signs? Hard to believe!

There are people who vote for their party regardless. The signs help them to remember the candidate they’re going to vote for.
Snooze you lose. ;)
Nothing tackier than election signs, and the locals waving to the traffic on the bypass …..
Todd Doherty and supporters- there are too many of your signs on the Bypass. As other posters are stating- TACKY. It makes are City look bad. I will not vote for you for if this is your campaign strategy to get my vote.
Did not know it was called until, came back last night.
@Northern Citizen My best guess is that you were never going to vote for him anyway. Sign or no sign! Better be prepared to not vote Lib, NDP or Green either cause those signs are definitely on their way. LoL
Given the conservatives an early advantage? Come on now the election was no secret. Just shows the other parties are definitely not ready to lead.
The local Conservatives are going to be debating with whom? So they will be doing their soliloquy routine for a while. That is what they have been doing for the last 4 years.
Read the article by Don Hawkins wrongly entitled “Trudeau Targets Opponents In Campaign Kickoff”.
Attacking an opponent would be an ad hominem approach, as in “Harper is stupid” for example. Based on Don Hawkins’ article rather than the headline, Trudeau is attacking the plans or non-plans of his opponents.
Isn’t that what it is all about – my plan is better than your plan?
“Stephen Harper kicked off the election campaign by making the claim that he is doing so to ensure that this election campaign is “funded by the [political] parties themselves rather than taxpayers”.
That points out, as Peter wrote in his column yesterday, how stupid Harper actually is or how stupid he thinks the electorate is.
At the moment it is a national debate and Trudeau has come out first, not Harper. Other than his stupid excuse for calling an early election, I have heard nothing from him on this site or any other headline.
On the other hand Trudeau has seen that Canadians want change because:
1. We are working harder and harder to make ends meet but are falling further and further behind.
2. if you want to create jobs and grow the Canadian economy you have to give the middle class Canadians a fair and real chance to succeed.”
3. That change is where your finances sit when you go over them at the end of the month and crunch the numbers. That plan is our Liberal plan.”
4. we will pay for our plan by making the wealthiest pay more in taxes and will stop sending cheques to millionaires just because they have children.
5. job creation measures including new infrastructure investments,
6. Making post-secondary schooling opportunities available to everyone
7. investing in research and innovation dealing particularly with environmental issues.
8. The NDP talks about an increase in the minimum wage but will not tell you that the plan will not help 99% of people that are earning the minimum wage
9. The NDP’s other answer for everything is to make the company you work for pay more in taxes. That means fewer jobs and less investment, all while our economy is stalled. The NDP would put the brakes on the economy at the worst possible time. The NDP will talk about helping the middle class but they won’t raise taxes on the wealthiest Canadians, and Mr Mulcair won’t cut taxes for the middle class.”
10. Stephen Harper is spending $125 million taxpayer dollars calling this lengthy election campaign in an attempt to keep his job.
I am looking for Harper’s song sheet.
My prediction is that Harper will stay relatively quiet during the entire election. In some ways he is like Dix was in the BC election. The more he opens his mouth, the greater the possibility he will find his foot stuck in it. He is not one to think on his feet very well.
As reported recently by McLean’s, here are some interesting Harper appointments which shows to me that he either listens to questionable advisers, or, if he makes the decisions by himself, he is neither a good judge of character, nor does he do his research with due diligence. Not good leadership qualities to say the least.
Arthur Porter: Member of Security Intelligence Review Committee, the independent body that oversees the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Later he was appointed to chair the committee, but the next year he resigned from SIRC after the National Post questioned his dealings with an international lobbyist. Porter was the chief executive officer of the McGill University Health Centre from 2004 to 2011, but was accused of being involved in bribery related to the construction of the hospital. He died this year, detained in Panama while he fought extradition to face fraud charges in Canada
Dean Del Mastro Parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister, May 2011 to September 2013. Recently he was sentenced to one month in prison and four months of house arrest after being found guilty of exceeding the election spending limit in 2008 and submitting a false document.
Mike Duffy Senator for Prince Edward Island, Currently on trial for 31 charges, including fraud and breach of trust, related to expenses and contracts claimed as a senator. Suspended from the Senate in November 2013.
Pamela Wallin Senator for Saskatchewan. Wallin is being investigated by the RCMP for expenses she claimed as a senator. Suspended from the Senate in November 2013.
Patrick Brazeau Senator for Quebec. Charged in March with fraud and breach of trust for expenses claimed as a senator, Brazeau is also on trial for charges of assault and sexual assault. He has also been charged with assault, uttering death threats, cocaine possession and breaching bail conditions as a result of an April 2014 incident. He was suspended from the Senate in November 2013.
Marc Nadon Supreme Court justice. After Nadon had been nominated and sworn in, the Supreme Court ruled in March 2014 that Nadon was not qualified to fill one of the seats designated for Quebec on the high court. The affair later culminated in an unusual public dispute between the government and the chief justice.
Bruce Carson Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office. Currently facing charges of improper lobbying and influence peddling.
Nigel Wright Chief of staff to the Prime Minister, September 2010 to May 2013. Well-regarded when he was chosen to oversee the Prime Minister’s Office, Wright resigned in May 2013 after it was revealed he had given $90,000 to Mike Duffy to cover the senator’s disputed expenses.
Peter Penashue Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, May 2011 to March 2013. Admitted in March 2013 that his campaign in 2011 had accepted ineligible donations and resigned his cabinet portfolio and his seat. Ran in the resulting by-election, but lost. Earlier this year, the official agent for Penashue’s campaign was charged with violating the Elections Act.
Don Meredith Senator for Ontario. Previously questioned about his education credentials, Meredith’s treatment of staff is currently being investigated by the Senate and he was expelled from the Conservative caucus recently after the Toronto Star reported allegations that the senator had had a sexual relationship with a teen girl.
I am a little surprised the NDP and Liberals haven’t figured out a candidate for these regions yet. I suppose either party doesn’t have much reason to put in a lot of resources into a campaign in PG anyway. We’re Tory Blue, even if it means sending a useless MP like Dick to Ottawa for 20 years.
A National Post article.

Hopefully you’ll find a little humour in it.
Also the “NP Explainer: Why the early election call is important” might be interesting.
Mom got a phone call a week ago from Conservative party asking if they could put signs on yard
Does anybody know if nomination dates are even planned? I’m really curious, but I’m sure as heck not contacting the parties themselves to find out. Maybe from a pay phone.
There were some articles on 250 about some dates but I forget what they were.
Who cares anyway? Let Harper’s people bore themselves talking to themselves. There plans for the next 4 years will not be debated except by the pundits and people on the NEWS250s of the country. People have short memories. What will be reported in the last couple of weeks of the campaign will be what sticks in people’ minds when they are voting.
The more time he takes, the more frequently he will have his feet in his mouth.
This is just another stupid move on Harper’s part. Kinda follows him around.
Remember when people liked to vote? Remember when your local rep actually represented you? Voting is the only thing left of our “democratic” society.. Once any party gets in power they do what ever they want.. We have seen it both provincially and federally for a long time now. Harper has been dictating to us for a long time.. Crusty doing the same thing. I am not sure the solution but sure sick of the problem. Big business owns us and the governments are selling us out to them and there is nothing we can do about it.. Anytime a politician says a decision is in our best interest it means it has nothing to do with our interest but all about theirs.
Attack adds are basically bullying.. Why are they legal? Just tell me what you will do and how you will pay for..and be HONEST… Why is that to much to ask these days ?
Well P Val I see you have played the bully card when will the race card come out ? Just go out and vote folks never mind all the BS the political parties are give enough out already ….
Well P Val I see you have played the bully card when will the race card come out ? Just go out and vote folks never mind all the BS the political parties are giveing enough out already ….
Gwf, really? All the parties will be using attack adds..but guessing you like them.. Your race card statement is disgusting.
The more we have easy access to information, the more politicians want to create noise to interfere with well researched information.
Politicians of old were used to travelling to a place where no one heard them and no one saw them. These days anyone can see and hear their mostly nonsensical nattering on TV if they so choose. The Emperor has shed his clothes over time.
Sometimes it seems we are still in the Nixon era when he lost the TV debate because his makeup was not properly done or not done at all. Too many politicians still do not understand the media and the people listening to the media. Too many still think we are fools.
The only reasons we are fools is because we keep electing fools rather than simply staying away. In spite of what people say, I believe the results will still generally be the same whether the turnout is 98%, 73%, or 47%. Nobody has proven otherwise so far because it cannot be proven.
gopg2015 – Please stop calling Harper stupid. He is not stupid. I mean Justin Trudeau’s comments about “whipping out our CF18s” is that not stupid? Or the economy fixes itself “is that not stupid?” Or we should try to make friends with ISIS “is that not stupid?” Come on now gopg2015, if want to focus on stupidity then look in your own red back yard.
Harper had to call a longer campaign account not only is he fighting the Liberals and NDP, but some big powerful unions, and Liberal loving media.
I’ll vote for whichever party caps immigration, especially from the middle east, the Sudan etc… I have a lot of family in Paris, Germany… all over Europe, and watching the destruction it has had on their way of life is shocking. There are a ton of areas in Paris where the non-muslims are warned not to venture into… as in Germany ….
Pay attention folks, won’t be long till Canada is subsidizing the problems of the middle east.. and Africa… and taking in the dame people….
Actually I think Harper is really smart.
gopg2015 we get it already, you love Trudeau
Oh and gopg2015 (gus) we are actually saving money – the previous elections were 3 in 7 years – now we are 2 in 7 years (this one 4 years along and next one probably 3 if there is a minority). So in effect we have saved 350 million up until the next election by having one less thanks to a majority.
What I do not understand is why Elections Canada has to do anything in the first month other than watch a few campaign ads, hardly have to lease space and hire staff to do that. I hear part of the extra cash is so they can canvas door to door this time and increase voter turnout.
Actually I think Harper is really smart.
===========================
I think he’s a zealot.
I think that Harper is a family man, and enjoys taking his family to a hockey game. Plus he enjoys being Prime Minister, and worked hard to get that job.
Knocking Harper seems to be the past time of some people who have very little to do, and all day to do it. Did you ever notice that the Harper Carpers never go after anyone else, like the Liberals, NDP, or Green’s. They all basically have tunnel vision, and can’t get beyond criticizing Harper.
Basically they have lost the last three elections regardless of what party they supported and they just cannot come to terms with the fact they have been supporting the losing parties.
Palopu, it’s called “Harper Derangement Frenzy (HDF)”!
From a link that I provided a few weeks ago”
“the Canadian media complex is in the grip of Harper Derangement Frenzy (HDF), which is an upgrade to hurricane status from Harper Derangement Syndrome, identified several years ago by Lorne Gunter as “an ideological hatred of Prime Minister Stephen Harper that is so acute its sufferers’ ability to reason logically is impaired.” The upgraded HDF extends the definition to incorporate the media hell-bent on a pre-election campaign to bring down the Harper government regardless of any facts.”
“Knocking Harper seems to be the past time of some people who have very little to do, and all day to do it.”
That is an extremely condescending remark. I won’t even repeat the next sentence. Essentially you have placed yourself in exactly the same category when you are incapable of debating the merits over one party to another and eventually, when all the kids come out to play in their riding associations local candidates against each other.
If one were to go by the last sentence you made then there would never be a change in government. Just think you logic with that statement through a bit.
When one goes after individuals or people who they support rather than for their logical assessment of party plans, even their ideologies, they are showing that they are bereft of ideas, vision, thinking etc.
I conduct my life with as few extreme opinions as possible, always open to changing my ideas. Therefore, when there is a choice of three or more parties, I always stay in the middle.
I totally agree with gopg2015! So criticism of the present PM and the record of his ten years in charge is “carping”? What’s next? A trip to the woodshed?
Anyone who thinks our current crop of party leaders are stupid has not been paying very close attention. All are well educated, mostly well spoken & quite politically aware. Choose the party or candidate of your choice but this referring to party leaders as less than intelligent is getting old. The CF18 comment was hilarious, a bit inappropriate, but hilarious. I’m with NMG, Harper is a smart man but a bit of a zealot. Mulcair…I’ve said it before, I like him as the official opposition leader but I can’t see him as a leader nationally or internationally.
NMG – “I think he’s a zealot.”
Harper a zealot? He’s way too cool to be a zealot. He’s just a man who loves Canada and it’s people and wants it to thrive. I’m sure the red stripes and the orange stripes are the same, but they just don’t have the policy and leadership to make the grade. But that being said, Justin’s hair is nice and Tom’s beard ain’t bad. ;)
Actually 4 years with a majority. The other 6 years the other parties who paint Harper as Devil incarnate could have chose to form a coalition but chose not to. At lease one of them was required to pass legislation during that time period.
Palopu states; “Knocking Harper seems to be the past time of some people who have very little to do, and all day to do it. Did you ever notice that the Harper Carpers never go after anyone else, like the Liberals, NDP, or Green’s. They all basically have tunnel vision, and can’t get beyond criticizing Harper.”
No other Prime Minister or government in Canada’s history has been the focus of so much hate and bitterness, ever wonder why Palopu? It’s because of this government’s contempt of parliament, it’s arrogance and disdain for our Charter of Rights and Freedom, it’s view that our justice system is against it, it’s disingenuous notion that human rights can be compromise for the sake of profit… all of these reasons are why this slime minister and his government are despised so much!!!
Sophic, “Both opposition parties did exactly that by introducing a “non confidence” vote in the house of commons, knowing that his government was in minority, what did Harper do??? He shut down parliament by proroguing it, now that was a b*stard move wasn’t it?”. Yep it was but politically it was a smart move, look where & what it got him. You may despise the man (hate is a strong word that most people don’t fully understand), but you have to give him credit for playing the game well.
Sophic Sage…seriously you have to swear to get your point across? The PM is within his rights to do what he needs to do to save his government and keep stability in our nation. The coalition between what?! The PQ (party dedicated to breaking up Canada) Lib and NDP to bring down a government? I think any sound minded PM would have done the same.. What do you want S.S.? A banana republic where the government changes like people change their socks? Who would want to invest in that climate of uncertainty?
The only government, not just in the history of Canada, but the history of all commonwealth countries, to have been found to be “in contempt of parliament”. If that doesn’t scream “banana republic” nothing does!!!
Anyone that supports such a government deserves my contempt!!!
People’s memories are short, their understanding of the issues are poor, and the third party promotion of a continuation of the Harper government has been building for some time in the media before the election was even called.
Obviously having been found in contempt of parliament (can it get any worse?) is fine with his followers. Prorogation when things get too hot, as well! Not daring to mention the last name of one of his opponents – priceless!
Wish these party leaders would come stand around my garden and talk for a while. Wouldn’t have to fertilize for years to come AND have the best garden in the country.
So now you are calling countries like Germany a banana republic? They have been running coalition government almost since the end of the second world war. We know little about such systems in the USA and Canada. We are used to pitting people against each other rather than working together. It is a whole different mindset we will eventually
have to accept in our modern world.
From the London School of Economics web site. It is a school which Harper did not attend.
“In June, Prime Minister David Cameron told his MPs that the new Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government represented a ‘clean break from the past and a new start for our country’. But while it is novel in Britain, in Europe, coalitions have been the norm for decades. Currently across the 27 countries of the European Union, 20 are coalition governments.”
“Looking in more detail, ten EU countries (including France, Germany and the UK) have governing coalitions composed of a mainstream center-right party in coalition with a Liberal party.”
Netherlands and Luxemburg have had a coalition government ever since 1945. Germany has had a coalition government the third longest in the EU countries about 98% of the time.
On another post Sophic says:
“Hey out to lunch Palpou, if Imperial Metals can donate over $200,000 to the BC Liberal campaign fund, as do most other corporations, what makes you think they are not contributing at the federal level?”
The law says – which I posted for him including the link.
“Corporations and trade unions may not make contributions to political entities.” (FEDERAL)
http://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=res&dir=ces&document=part6&lang=e
Sophic’s reply to what appears to be error on his part – silence.
And as for kidding you – a non confidence motion is not a coalition in any stretch of the imagination. The opposition can introduce non confidence any time the house is sitting whether it has a hope of passing or not. A coalition is where other parties cooperate to form government – and here we are again 2015 – with NDP and Liberals running against each other, instead of cooperating to unseat the man they claim is destroying Canada.
I don’t particularly like Harper, but my choice is NDP who owe Quebec big time if they win, and we’ll be paying the bills for that political debt, or the Liberals who haven’t even got a candidate in my riding.
Grizzly2, lmao, good one. Sophic, always the flair for the dramatic. Canada a Banana Republic? Do you really have any concept of what you are saying? Do you realize how lucky you are to live in a place like Canada? The very fact that you can say & post your comments with very little fear of reprisal is a testament to our country & how fortunate you are to be here. Is it or our leaders perfect? Of course not. Could they or us improve? You bet, but if you really get out & see the world you would realize just how lucky we are.
gopg2015 – Would Germany allow a separatist to back up a coalition? Only in Canada I say?
Coalitions work only when there is a give and take between the potential partners, a mindset which requires compromise! Compromise is not a word encountered in Canada on the political scene: It is either all or nothing!
However, there is hope! More than two thirds of Canadians polled are in favor of a coalition government if it keeps the present government (which can rule again with as little as 28% of the vote!) from winning again!
Regarding prorogation detoe44 states; “Yep it was but politically it was a smart move, look where & what it got him. You may despise the man (hate is a strong word that most people don’t fully understand), but you have to give him credit for playing the game well.”
Perfectly said detoe44, a prime example of how a person values his own political future over what is in the best interests of Canada. Harper prorogued parliament to protect himself and his party, what was in the best interest for Canada did not enter into his “Party of One” sized brain… and everyone here knows it. How is shutting down government in the best interests of Canada, or Canadians? It’s NOT!!!
A vote for Harper is a vote against the best interests of Canada.
It is interesting that after reading the nature of European coalitions, if you even read it, you assume the coalition in Canada had to involve a so-called separatist.
If you were to read it, you would discover that ten EU countries have governing coalitions composed of a mainstream center-right party in coalition with a Liberal party.
You really have to let your mind open up a bit.
BTW, Bavaria is Germany’s Quebec. Belgium is similar.
Sophic, thank you. Of course he did it for personal & party reasons, most politicians aren’t in the game for altruistic reasons. Like I wrote, despise the person’s politics or even the person himself, but give credit & respect where it is due…& never underestimate your opponent or dismiss them. Political careers throughout the ages have been destroyed that way.
Coalition governments can work well and have worked well. But the shenanigans that lead to prorogue of parliament by PM Harper go beyond a mere coalition. We are talking about the Liberals and NDP signing an agreement to form a coalition, which could only bring about a majority with the support of the Bloc whose mandate was to break up Canada. So this was not a coalition, but more of a mutiny of parliament. Steven Harper saw this and did the correct thing. I never implied or intended to say that coalitions were bad. But in this situation it was unique situation which had to be dealt with in an unique way; only history will judge such a move, which was smart on behalf of PM Harper.
And you really believe that if those three parties had formed a coalition that they would have broken up Canada? LOL
That is the kind of thinking by Canadian citizens that Harper depends on for his power.
I hope when the City cuts the grass they mow all the signs down with it. To early to be putting signs up.
gopg2015 states; “That is the kind of thinking by Canadian citizens that Harper depends on for his power.”
It’s called “delusional” thinking, the very definition of the Harper Conservative base. Wrong is right, criminal behaviour is righteous behaviour, as long as it is done in the best interests of the party. Hitler would be envious of such a religiously fervent ideological following, in their eyes this monster, and his government, can do no wrong.
gopg2015 – What one believes is only relevant to what they believe in. So in the three stooges + 1 (cause the Green party was privy to such nonsense) what I believe has no relevance because it didn’t happen due to Steven Harper’s quick and smart thinking. As we know, politics is filled with optics and less reality then more. So if by chance the Lib and NDP formed a coalition propped up by the Bloc whose focus is the breakup of Canada, we would never know thanks to PM Harper the damage that could have caused Canada both within and beyond it’s boarders. It may have rushed in a form of instability that may still be felt today. So in all reality what you believe and what I believe in politics is really irrelevant. :)
I’ll vote for whatever party cleans up their signs after being knocked over, destroyed, ripped up, blown over the fastest. Might be the Greens…
So there you have it gopg2015, it all comes down to your “belief” system. I believe sticks can turn into snakes, I believe burning bushes can talk, I believe it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, and every single person in the world drowned, and the diversity in our races and ethnic origins we have today was a result of Noah’s family getting “busy” with each other to repopulate the earth.
If I can believe all these things, I can most certainly believe Harper is the best Prime Minister Canada has ever had.
Did I mention “delusional” thinking already?
I do appreciate Harper for breaking the record of debt by putting us deeper than anyone else, another 150 billion, and he still says he had a balanced budget..
I tried to find this poll results on a Conservative site, but could not.
Polling firm Angus Reid Global surveyed more than 1,500 respondents and asked them to select up to six words from a predetermined list that they would use to describe various world leaders. Here are the most popular choices for each prime minister or president.
U.S. President Barack Obama – The most popular words picked by respondents to describe Mr. Obama were “influential” (46%), “charismatic” (43%), “compassionate” (33%), “inspiring” (32%), and “credible” (29%). (positive = 5 of5) “Canadians hold him in higher esteem than their own prime minister.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel – Ms. Merkel was most often described as “strong” (33%),”influential” (33%),”credible” (26%),”strategic” (22%) and “courageous” (16%). (positive = 5 of 5)
British Prime Minister David Cameron – Mr. Cameron, who had the least name recognition among these five leaders, was described by respondents as “influential” (24%),”credible” (21%),”strategic” (19%),”strong” (16%) and “honest” (14%). (positive = 5 of 5)
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper – Canadians polled by Angus Reid were more likely to use negative words to describe Mr. Harper, with “secretive” the choice of 39%, followed most frequently by “arrogant” (37%),”dishonest” (31%),”strategic” (26%) and “boring” (26%). (positive = 1 of 5)
Russian President Vladimir Putin – Respondents described Mr. Putin as “arrogant” (54%),”corrupt” (52%),”bully” (52%),”dishonest” (45%), and “secretive” (41%). (positive = 0 of 5)
Not bad. He did better than Putin on the international scene
1. secretive
2. arrogant
3. dishonest
4. boring
Al great qualities for a leader of anything.

Since the topic of a separatist leader has come up I thought this quote from Harper might be appropriate.
“If Ottawa giveth, then Ottawa can taketh away… This is one more reason why Westerners, but Albertans in particular, need to think hard about their future in this country.
After sober reflection, Albertans should decide that it is time to seek a new relationship with Canada. …Having hit a wall, the next logical step is not to bang our heads against it.
It is to take the bricks and begin building another home – a stronger and much more autonomous Alberta. It is time to look at Quebec and to learn. What Albertans should take from this example is to become “maitres chez nous”.

A separatist in Blue-eyed Sheik clothing to be unleashed when????

The only government, not just in the history of Canada, but the history of all commonwealth countries, to have been found to be “in contempt of parliament”
————–
Please do some research before you rant. As “Power and Politics” writer radical Centrist will explain to you (and provide you with examples) if you actually do the research is:
…claims that “No federal government or cabinet minister has ever been found in contempt before.”
This is also false. Many governments and ministers (and individual members) have been found in contempt. However, of all the prima facie cases of contempt raised in the House of Commons since 1867, only five motions containing the word “contempt” have been adopted by the House. What is unique in this particular situation is that no government has ever been defeated by a non-confidence motion that arose from a finding of contempt of Parliament. Please note this distinction. It wasn’t the finding of contempt by the Speaker and committee that defeated the government, but rather, a non-confidence motion filed by the Opposition based on the finding of contempt. That this confidence motion was moved is also unusual because the Canadian House of Commons has traditionally been very reluctant to invoke its authority to reprimand or punish anyone found in contempt.
…What the Government was found in contempt of is a Standing Order and the general parliamentary privilege of the right of the House and Members to demand papers and to not be obstructed in the discharge of carrying out their parliamentary duties
I’m voting conservative for two reasons..Reason one.. Sophic and the other left wing minions will self destruct if they get back in.. Reason two.. See reason one..!!
gopg2015, your lack of comprehension of what you read is deplorable, even worse than before.

And you really believe that if those three parties had formed a coalition that they would have broken up Canada? LOL

Anyone who reads this should be able to understand that Cheetos wrote “the Bloc whose mandate was to break up Canada” not the coalition’s mandate was to break up Canada
Everyone should read slinky’s comment twice over and then ask themselves; is this person actually defending the “contempt of parliament” the Harper Government was found to be in?
The Harper Conservatives are in “contempt” of more than just parliament, they are in contempt of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and they are in contempt of democracy itself!!!
As for northman’s comment, you flatter me, I had no idea that the power of my words could influence your vote. Not that you were always going to vote Conservative anyway… ;-)
No, I am actually showing that you are wrong. It is not my post but a post I copy and pasted from “Power and Politics” trying to correct bloggers like yourself – and maybe a few Liberals who think like you do without doing the research.
Again, don’t make this about me; everyone here probably realizes that it was “wrong” of the Harper Government to be found “in contempt of parliament”. This discussion thread is not about me, so stop referring to me, and that goes for northman as well… yeesh…
Then post correct researched info
The left wing said they’d abolish poverty
right wing said they;d abolish bureaucracy
Odin said he’d abolish ice giants
Where are the ice giants?
Vote Odin
Slinky, what other reason would someone be worried that a separatist party would join a coalition? Quick, think on your feet.

gopg2015 & Sophic Sage; Okay one more time. I’ll put it down in a different way. The Liberals and NDP were so desperate for power that they were willing to sign up with “The Bloc” who were “dedicated in breaking up Canada”. They needed the “Bloc” and the “Greens” to attain a majority. That’s more then contempt of parliament S.S., that’s treason. If the Liberals and NDP were willing to do that, then they cannot be trusted to lead Canada. I rest my case.
Cheetos, and you think Harper can be trusted.. He pushes huge bills through parliament with over a thousand pages and hidden in there is laws he changes..yeah.. Would have more trust in a minority government who can’t push anything they want through the house… Don’t you also love how honest Harper is with the new child bribe? Says parents will get approx $2300 a year..but he failed to mention getting rid of a child deduction so really the parents will see about $160 a year…so honest is this fellow….
Didn’t Harper also consider an alliance with the bloc when he was in a minority situation?
I wish Doherty could put more signs up, it’s embarrassing how many signs he has up….kind of shows blatant disregard for smart spending…just like his boss
P Val. Its called an omnibus bill, and has been used by various Governments for years. Harper did not invent the concept, he just uses it like other politicians.
Sophic Sage. You state that you hold anyone in contempt who supports the Harper Government. Hmmmm. Holding 5 Million people who voted for the Conservatives is quite a chunk of contempt. Hope it doesn’t weigh you down.
gopg2015. You state that my comments are condescending, which if good for a laugh if nothing else, then you go on to make the following statement.
**That is the kind of thinking by Canadian citizens that Harper depends on for his power** Now who is being condescending. You are implying that 5 million people who voted for Harper do not have the intelligence to see how things are being done in Ottawa.
Only P Val, Sophic Sage, gopg2015, and Ataloss have the ability to fully understand politics and all its ins and outs. The rest of us are just rubes. Hmmmm. Seems the rubes are winning.
“The NDP now leads in the poll average with 32.4%, an increase of over three points since the pre-hiatus projection update. The Conservatives have dropped a little more than one point to 28.9%, while the Liberals are down a little less than one point to 27.4%. The Bloc has moved ahead of the Greens with 5.2% to 4.9%.”~ ThreeHundredEight. com
No I would say the rubes are losing.
Ha but Palopu he said he wouldn’t use that to push through hidden agendas…and what does he do..lied to us and does it.. Huge difference by far…one is called being a bold faced liar…
my2bits is right; “On 26 March 2011, Bloc Québécois leader Duceppe stated that Conservative leader Stephen Harper had in 2004 tried to form a coalition government with the Bloc and NDP in response to Harper’s allegations that the Liberals intended to form a coalition with the Bloc and the NDP.”
So Cheetos, is Harpercrite not also guilty of treason? Oh wait, that would be double standards, where only other parties forming a coalition government with the Bloc Quebecois are treasonous, but when the Harpercrite government attempts to do it, that’s OK? LOL.
Seems nearly every time the NDP leads in the pre-election polls they then go down to defeat in the only one that really counts. Just reading through all the comments above, I still think Harper will go back in. His opponents on here are already showing the kind of desperation those who know their choices are going to lose usually exhibit. Wonder who’ll be the first to go after it’s all over, Trudeau or Mulcair?
Here is the smoking gun Cheetos, enjoy the read. When do you people actually get tired of defending a two-faced hypocritical government?

Socredible: Ditto! LOL
gopg2015:- “Polling firm Angus Reid Global surveyed more than 1,500 respondents and asked them to select up to six words from a predetermined list that they would use to describe various world leaders.
—————————————————————————————–
But how do Americans hold him? And why should there be a “pre-determined list” anyways? That’s the same as asking Canadians six things that are great about Canada, and then only giving them a pre-determined list of six things to choose from. The answers will be very predictable, because they’ve been pre-determined.
We all know what dogs do to polls.
The only poll that counts is on election day.
Socredible. You have obviously never done social surveys. If you leave a social survey open ended for people to put in any 5 words they wished, it would be very difficult to measure. The words were likely chosen by a range of people from the full spectrum of politics. I do not know what the list was, but I do know the following where on the list since they got picked for the 5 leaders.
I consider the top 9 of the list to be positive characteristics for leaders of countries. In fact, I would consider them to be positive characteristics for leader of virtually any group of people, not just citizens of a country. Obviously one cannot just put positive words in or negative words.
Influential
Charismatic
Compassionate
Inspiring
Credible
Strategic
Strong
Courageous
Honest
——————————————-
Boring
Secretive
Arrogant
Bully
Dishonest
Corrupt
So, here is a challenge for you. Which words would you not have used? With which words would you replace them? You are limited to 10 words for positive traits and 10 for negative traits.
If you do not understand what I am talking about, read up a bit of how to set up an effective questionnaire based on measuring attributes of things, people, etc.
BTSW, this is a survey, not a poll.
——————————————————–
That’s the same as asking Canadians six things that are great about Canada
No it isn’t. People were not asked what is great about the people, they were asked what they thought about the people, given both negative and positive attributes.
What Detoe44 wrote at 3:43 pm:
Well said.
metalman.
Speaking of detoe44’s comment at 3:43 pm, part of it asks a question of me; “Do you realize how lucky you are to live in a place like Canada?”
The point I, and a lot of others are trying to make on this discussion thread is that Canada use to be a better country before the Harper Government took over with it’s majority. Some of us smarter ones know that Harper, and his government is bad for this country. Here is an excerpt from a news website that simply underscores our assertions:
“The Harper government must be getting used to negative report cards from respected international bodies. The latest comes from the Bertelsmann Foundation, based in Germany. It says that “a strong case can be made that the quality of governance provided by the government of Canada has deteriorated” since Harper got his majority in 2011.”
If some of us on this discussion board see this, and other respected and reputable international foundations, and organizations see this, then why can’t you? Are you not reading the mountains of “evidence” we have been posting to this discussion board over the last few months? … or are you people being willfully ignorant? Anyone that supports this Harper government is supporting it continued demise.
Last part of my comment should read … is supporting Canada’s continued demise.
