Each party running a full slate of candidates is entitled to spend a maximum of about $25 million for a five-week campaign; each candidate an average of about $100,000. But, under the recently passed Fair Elections Act, those spending limits will increase by 1/37 for each day a campaign exceeds 37 days. That’s an extra $675,000 per day for each party’s national campaign, an additional $2,700 per day for their candidates.
A campaign that is double the minimum length would effectively double the spending limits and, theoretically, double the amount of money parties and candidates stand to be reimbursed — by taxpayers — when it’s all over.
Yup, that’s the Harper government costing us more of our taxpayers money than ever before simply to get them elected. But hey… who cares right?

Each party is “entitled” to spend….
What if the NDP, the Liberals and what the heck, Liz’s party as well all decided to protest the increased spending limits by spending nothing, or as little as is absolutely possible!
Just imagine, they could all get together (in order to save money) and put out only one single ad stating “we are trying to portray fiscal responsibility by not spending what we are entitled to spend!”
Or, they could probably do what they will probably do and that is spend absolutely every dollar that they can get their hands on!

The question then is, who has the power to allow them access to this wasteful entitlement? The one who stands to benefit, the one with access to the largest war chest. You know the one responsible for the worst GDP #s during his term, one of the largest most secretive governments and the most debt/deficits inflicted on the Canadian public. Heave Steve.

Fortunately or unfortunately, sadly politics is little more than a game!
By and large, many of the most vocal complainers are nothing more than people cheering for those that are less adept at playing the game!
Anybody that thinks that Mulcair or Trudeau would not be playing the game to their advantage, if they had the advantage, is not dealing in reality!
The truth might hurt, but the truth is the truth!

Just think if they get another majority they will have saved the taxpayers over 300 million dollars, but nobody will report on that fact. Sorry SS but the NDP, Greens, or Liberals do not have enough for one normal length election never mind the cash to finance an extended one so it won’t cost an extra dime to taxpayers there.
And Sage to answer your question on Likely (sorry but some people gotta work), no false rumors, actual facts here. So much so that it went global, but somehow just dropped off the map a month later. Maybe you don’t read the news, but it prompted First Nations to issue a written warning to all their band members and shut down the fishery due to the issue of skin peeling off the salmon. Google is your friend, no yuks here. I was curious because I have heard nothing else about this and even Google searches only list items about this from last year.

slinky, I’ve been busy with work the past several days, so I haven’t had the chance to find out how Sophie’s excursion to Williams Lake to attend the Mount Polley mine partial re-opening rally went!
Did Sophie and Ataloss receive a warm welcome from the workers at the rally?
Were their protest signs a big hit, or did any of the workers hit Sophie and ataloss over the head with the signs?
What kind of gas mileage did they get on their trip to and from Williams Lake?
So many questions! So many questions!!

Good ole Stevie and his Conservatives, costing us taxpayers at least $125 million more dollars by calling the longest election period in decades. Remember this when you vote on October 19th folks.
“If the rumours are true and Prime Minster Stephen Harper issues the writs for a federal election on Sunday, it could increase the total bill to taxpayers by an additional $125 million or more, Liberal MP Marc Garneau asserted Friday in Ottawa. That $125 million would be in addition to the cost of a regular 37-day campaign, which Elections Canada estimates would cost about $375 million.”

Actually, the longest election period in over a century!!!
“According to The Canadian Press, only Canada’s first two election campaigns were longer. The 1867 campaign lasted 81 days, while the 1872 campaign went for 96 days. Back then, voting was staggered over the country for a period of several months.”
Stevie and his Conservatives are special that way… thanks Stevie for costing us taxpayer $125 million more dollars in election expenses, and for launching us into the longest election campaign in over a century. We will be so sick and tired of your election ads that we will vote you out just so we will never see them again.
78 days of hate filled, and fear filled Conservative ads, is something most of us are not looking forward to… thanks Harper!!!

Yes slinky use any amount of money you can make up because you are a Conservative, after all Harper and his gang still believe that this year’s budget deficit is still a surplus, regardless of what the parliamentary budget office and the Bank of Canada says.
You are a Conservative, so ignore everyone else, because if reality doesn’t fit into your Harperland views and agenda, change them into lies and call it the truth. It really is delusional thinking, and the more you comment, the more others will see that.

There are two increases in expenses related to the doubling of the election campaign time PrinceGeorge, the doubling of reimbursable costs to each party that we as taxpayers would pay AND the $125 Million increase in direct Election Canada costs and expenses for keeping election offices open for that longer period of time.
But good ole Stevie says it won’t cost us taxpayers a single dime… just more lies for his blindly loyal delusional base to swallow. He keeps feeding them feces and they keep calling it pudding… it is the Conservative way.

“Pressed by reporters why he launched the campaign so far in advance of the fixed election date, which boosts the cost to taxpayers, Harper said: “Everybody knows the election date and the campaigns of the other parties, as near as I can tell, have already begun.”
“I feel very strongly…that those campaigns need to be conducted under the rules of the law. That the money come from the parties themselves, not from government resources, parliamentary resources or taxpayer resources.”
The second paragraph is the feces that he calls pudding for all you righties to gobble down on. Feast away slinky, Palopu, Hart Guy, et al. Imagine that, at the very start of an election campaign, the lies start coming out of his mouth, and his delusional base just laps it up, without question.

Nice try to obfuscate and deflect the issue! You have received proof that your boos, who represents the party, did indeed say it! “That the money come from the parties themselves, not from government resources, parliamentary resources or taxpayer resources.”
Taxpayers will indeed have their resources (pockets) deeply dipped into. Even Elections Canada, a taxpayer funded body states that the cost will be considerable higher than a campaign of the usual length.
Of course Conservatives may wish he had never said that, so they avoid mentioning it. Can’t blame them for doing damage control by denying it.
That’s it. Matter closed.

This lying piece of chite, couldn’t even make out of an election announcement with out telling a lie, and we have 11 weeks to go!!!
With Harper’s foot in mouth disease acting up, we will be kicking Conservative a$$ all over the place on here. Get use to discussion threads like this one go quite PrinceGeorge, because they are beginning to realize they are dealing with a deceptive, lying, sociopath who doesn’t care about murdered and missing women in Canada, or the many allegations of gang rapes, torture and murders of locals in other countries by Canadian mining companies.
No, it’s open season on Harper, and I will be doing my best to show everyone on here what a useless steaming pile of excrement this man truly is!!!

Again, what he said was “It is important that every political party’s campaign be financed by itself – not government resources, not parliamentary resources, not of all the other resources available to us when the campaigns are not on.”
He did not say “this will not cost taxpayers a dime”
Again, funding for the campaigns of all parties comes from their own coffers and war chests within the parties themselves. Before the election is called the party in power (and other parties, although not as much) can draw on the resources (money) within government and the parliament. After the writ is dropped no party can use these funds but must use solely money from within their own accounts.
How is this saying “the election will not cost taxpayers a dime”? Maybe in your world PG and Sage, but not in the real one.
That’s it, the matter is closed, goodnight

Hey slinky did you know Elections Canada also reimburses federal political parties 50% of their paid campaign election expenses if they receive at least 2% of the valid votes nationally, or 5% of votes cast in electoral districts where they field candidates?
Did you also know, individual party candidates can be reimbursed up to 60% of the election expense limits established for the riding, if they receive at least 10% of the valid votes.
The money for these reimbursements comes from the taxpayer, from us! Harper knows this and he lied, double the length of the campaign, double the amount the Conservatives and other parties are eligible to spend, and DOUBLE the amount of reimbursements us taxpayers have to shell out to the parties.
Add to that the direct increase of $125 Million in Election Canada expenses, and this is costing us taxpayers dearly. When Harper said; “That the money comes from the parties themselves, not from government resources, parliamentary resources or taxpayer resources.”… he was lying and full of chite!!!
IMO, Harper is a deceiver and a liar. That’s it, NOW the matter is closed.
