Traffic Troubles on the Road to Woof-Stock

Monday, August 31, 2015 @ 2:47 PM

Prince George, B.C. – There was enhanced RCMP  presence on  Chief Lake and Ness Lake Roads  on the weekend  to ensure  those attending the five day  music festival at Vivian Lake  could come and  go safely.   Turns out,  some folks on those roadways  would have to hoof  it  from  the  Woof.9 drivers were  issued speeding tickets,  4 others for excessive speeding  and that means their vehicles were impounded for one week.

One  was  cited for  an  IRP ( Immediate Roadside Prohibition)  for  blowing  a “fail” on the roadside breathalyser, which  means a 30 days license suspension.

2 were   issued a 3 day   suspension for  blowing a “warn”   and one was given a 24 hour   suspension, again  because of alcohol.

Prince George RCMP  Media Liaison Corporal  Craig Douglass  says  while there were issues on the roads leading to the festival,  there was no  problem at the actual  festival site.

Or as I call it, a normal Friday afternoon drive home.

Now, THAT was funny!

I agree with ski51. The RCMP had a reason as well as a duty to be there because they knew the event was going on through the permitting process.

If they would station themselves near an exit route from one or two popular pubs on Fridays, they would likely find the same. In fact, based on a rate of infractions/attendant at the pub versus a rate of attendance at the festival (to make it a fair comparison) the pub may even be worse, other than the speeding unless it is a rural pub.

Go, they’ve been sitting around pubs at closing time for years, with good results.

I certainly appreciate the work they do to keep more of us safe.

Thanks for that Grizzly2. It would be nice if we got a report, perhaps an annual or quarterly, about the number of total infractions from those locations and related to the accumulated seating capacity of the pubs in the sites they policed.

I am just concerned that these figures might cause a negative impact on future permit applications for such single events.

Ski51 hit the nail on the head. I would even say that this pretty much sums up a normal drive to and from home every day – chief/ness lake road is notorious for excessive speed and plain stupid reckless driving. Its not uncommon for people to be plugging along way over 100 in whats posted as an 80 zone. More police presence along that route is needed on a more regular basis. Actually it seems that excessive speeding everywhere on a whole in this town gets worse every year. Or maybe I’m just getting older lol.
