Draft No Smoking Bylaw Takes Next Step

Monday, August 31, 2015 @ 9:40 PM

Prince George, B.C. –  Although there are already  Provincial restrictions in place on where  folks can light up,  the City of Prince George is moving forward to enhance those non-smoking restrictions.

The new bylaw would prohibit smoking or “vaping” ( using e-cigarettes or any other  vapour  causing  device)  from:

  • a vehicle for hire;
  • in, or within nine (9) metres of, an enclosed or partially enclosed bus or taxi   shelter
  • within nine (9) metres of a sign post or sign indicating where persons wait to board a vehicle for hire or public transit;
  • within nine (9) metres measured on the ground from a point directly below any point of any opening into any building including any door or window that opens or any air intake;
  • in a customer service area;
  • within nine (9) metres of the perimeter of a customer service area;
  • on, or within twenty-five (25) metres of any outdoor sport facility, or playground;
  • within any open space area;
  • in a place of public assembly; or
  • in a building, premises or facility that is owned or leased by the City, other than a rented dwelling.

There are  fines for those found in  contravention of the bylaw.  $100 dollars for the first infraction, and it could build up to a maximum of $2,000.

The Public  Consultation on the proposed bylaw will start  mid September and run through to mid November.  Feedback will be  analysed and used to  tweak the bylaw.  Staff expect to have the final  draft before Council on December 14th .  The final reading and approval would not likely happen until  early in the new year,  so  the  bylaw  wouldn’t  likely be  in place until  late January.

I never thought I’d live to see the day where – thought this pendulum had swung too far…but here it is

This is going to be a treat of a thread . I mean . They are die hard rugged individualists . And they have a right to blow smoke in our faces and up our … Well you know . Cue the smoking idiots !!!! .

Well there you go . I wasn’t fast enough for one of them .

Are you referring to yourself stockaloss? What would you have said if there was a fat tax when you were(or likely still are) a waddling obese trucker? Have you no empathy for addictions?

I want them to film the moment they head to Ft George Park ( or whatever they call it now) and ask the hoodlums to put out their cigs.

Dow search tobacco smoking and mental health . Then look around at whom is smoking tobacco .

Huh? What a bizarre statement. Search overweight people and mental health and see who is obese. Do you see how stupid that is? Likely not. You once again show there is not a topic that you should just be silent and thought a fool, than post and remove all doubt.

I’m going to need a big pocket to hold my meterstick so I can measure where I can smoke!

The “smoker” versus “obese” comparison is ridiculous! When a smoker does his/her thing a non-smoking person is forced to inhale that person’s smoke polluted air – if you don’t breathe you croak!! How is a non-obese person affected by an obese person’s action? Does it cause a fattening of the slim person? Not smoking, exercising and maintaining proper weight are all health benefits. The mental health thing is another red herring! Anything can affect a person’s mental health, addictions, poverty, catastrophic events, genes, war, religion, politics!

I guess I will be having my smoke break in the street.
If every smoker has to be away from public assembly areas et el, that only leaves the roadway.

That will likely piss off a lot of drivers if smokers keep hindering traffic.

Wondering into traffic, how could that go wrong… Well if smoking doesn’t kill you, wandering into traffic will.

Why vamping? I don’t get it? They don’t stink like smokes, many people use them without nicotine! It’s just water vapour like those smoke machines at concerts or are we banning concerts too??? Where is the logic behind this?

Spelling ” vaping”

“I’m going to need a big pocket to hold my meterstick so I can measure where I can smoke!”

It should not be up to individuals to do that. We have all sorts of markings on the driving and walking surfaces. Simply mark the demarcation on the walkway then both the smoker and the public as well as any enforcer will know whether a smoker is in the allowed zone or not. Some people are unaware of overhead opening windows and vents.

We could create a whole new cadre of technically certified people who are licensed to make such demarcations. :-J

BTW, for those who may not know :-J is the emoticon for “tongue in cheek”. :-)

It’s the compounds in that “water” vapour that are the issue. If you wish to kill yourself slowly, please do so in the confines of your own home.

No one should get excited about this. Like a lot of bylaws it wont be enforced anyway. Back door of Pine center and front door of the hospital… good examples

Loki just don’t stand in the bike lane, that would definitely be a no no. Mustn’t imped the hordes of bike traffic.

I am curious who the city has that is going to enforce these new anti smoking laws…
the laws that are on the books now are not being enforced so I can just imagine.
I guess council , Mr Hall in particular, will have this warm fuzzy feeling that they are doing something while in reality doing nothing but making a big show and a lot of noise.

This entire thing is a little stupid. Nobody will enforce the bylaw, considerate smokers will go off to a secluded area so they don’t bother anyone, inconsiderate smokers will still not care and smoke anywhere they like. I think the only thing this really changes is there will be no smoking on outdoor patios. As an exsmoker, it’s all okay with me, but really ppl, smokers have rights too.

Maybe council never considered nine feet away as being out on the street in way of traffic..
Doesn’t council have anything better to do than think up bylaws to prevent consumers from going to certain places???

Hall confirmed on the news tonight that he feels the public should police this…kind of figures he would cow out on enforcement.
