City Council to Meet With School Board
Prince George, B.C. – Local politicians from city council and school board will meet tonight.
Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall says it fits with council’s pledge earlier this year to “re-connect with organizations in the community” as well as to discuss “various educational issues they may have in the district.”
“And that’s not unlike many of the meetings that we’ve held over the last number of months. We want to hear first hand what’s going on and what we can do to help.”
He says council plans to take what they hear tonight down to the UBCM convention in Vancouver later this month and to discuss it with B.C.’s education minister.
Hall anticipates they’ll be hearing about the funding challenges the board is currently facing.
“I think we probably will. We want to get an overview from the board of trustees as to what is going on in the district so that we’re up to speed and aware of those things,” he says.
“As a city council, when we have organizations like the school district having to make big decisions it impacts our city so obviously we want to hear first hand the challenges they have.”

From comments just heard, I’m sure that some parents would like a discussion on parking & traffic challenges around schools in PG, and some sort of systemic solution that doesn’t just involve blaming it on parents wanting convenience.
I am not sure why City Council would want to hear what is going on in the District as much as they should want to share their views on such volatile issues as the potential impact on parking on streets closes to the schools to drop off and pick up students.
Part of that has, of course, been exacerbated by SD57 closing schools causing longer distance to commute to schools.
Depending on where drivers have to park in order to pick up students, it can increase the dangers associated with pedestrians crossing streets to get to the pick-up spot.
It is as a result of the closures that school property facilities needed to be re-evaluated to ensure that adequate short term parking and “loading zones” are provided.
I think sholland has it right. SD57 should be able to deal with their own funding issues.
When it comes to the entire SD57 issues which have an impact on the entire region, they should be discussed at the FFG Regional District. Which then raises the question of whether the 4 city representatives have been able to convince the Board to have similar Board to Board discussions of common issues.
