Diversity Looking For Answers From School District
Prince George, B.C. -Diversity, a group dedicated to educating people about differences in the community, is seeking answers from the Prince George School District.
Coordinator Shawn Peters expressed his concerns at this week’s School District 57 board meeting over the district’s decision to cancel a Diversity event at Duchess Park Secondary School last April.
He addressed the board during the public input portion of the meeting because he said none of the trustees or the superintendent had responded to his emails asking why.
“I’ve asked for clarification but they won’t give me any,” Peters said afterwards. “I was planning to work with two schools last year and two weeks before the event at Duchess Park was to start I received an email from the superintendent saying it had been cancelled.”
Over the past two years he’s organized the event, he said participating groups have included the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society, The Red Cross and Prince George Pride, and said organizing it had been fairly routine.
“I’m just the organizer so I go to the societies and they provide me with pamphlets, the school district approves them, and I coordinate with the schools and the societies are allowed to set up tables during lunch hour.”
Peters said he was puzzled by the cancellation considering similar events at D.P. Todd Secondary and another in McBride went forward.
He said it’s also his understanding all future Diversity Week projects in the district have been shelved.
So what does he think it all means?
“It means either they think the district is way ahead on the issues of diversity and bullying and don’t need to deal with it or someone in the district has a personal beef and is making it where students are suffering.”
During Tuesday’s meeting School Board chair Tony Cable agreed to meet with Peters to discuss the matter.
“I’m sad I had to come to a (public) meeting to address this, I’ve been emailing him for two months so I hope he follows through.”

Diversity is a made up Liberal term, about a make believe society they want us to embrace. I would love to know where Shawn Peters lives, and if he practices what he preaches. My guessing is he rants and raves about diversity, but would rent a house for one night in the slums. Why is that Shawn? Diversity from a distance good enough for you? Do you send your kids to the nearest elementary school, or the best one, with the more respectful parents?
Do we really need some kid running around the schools teaching the children about diversity? Yet another college kid with a degree, and no life experiences or travels.. just read a book.
Leroy it is so easy to use the box of knowledge right in front of you . The etymology of terms like diversity could have been looked up by you much faster and more accurately in much less time than it took you to get it wrong . Unless of course if you Believe the Trudeau liberals are ancient Greeks .
Leroyjenkins what ever this fellow may or may not be, do or not do, as long as it is legal ( that is his business) whether we agree with him or not, I think he is deserving of some sort of response to the question he sent by email.
he organized a function that was cancelled and I think he is entitled to know the reason, afterall that is only polite.
How can we be diverse if we’re all supposed to be equal?
Because diversity and equality are not opposing concepts.

You’re right. Cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal are make believe. Glad we could clear that up.

If we’re equal we’re all the same aren’t we? How can we be diverse if we’re all the same?
I realize equality is along way from being universal but I keep think “Harrison Bergeron” when I think of equality. No diversity there.
No. “Equality”” is largely spoken of in terms of rights, opportunities, obligations, etc. “Diversity” is largely spoken of in terms of culture, religion, ethnicity, etc.
They are two totally different things and two people can be completely equal while being completely diverse from one another.
NMG shouldn’t you be working? it is only 1:35 Ottawa time at last post.
Isn’t Ottawa 3 hours ahead of Prince George? Geez, no wonder I can’t keep the TV schedule straight ;)
‘You’re right. Cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal are make believe. Glad we could clear that up.’ – Um, have you been to Richmond? The signs are in Mandarin, it is all chinese. Surrey? All Sikh. Even the chinese and East Indians have their own communities. Most major cities look ‘diverse’ from the air, but are broken up into ethnic groups once you get down to the nitty gritty.
Prince George is no different. Certain subdivisions are notoriously east indian, some are mostly native… such is life.
