Traffic Disruption Continues in Fort Fraser

Saturday, October 3, 2015 @ 12:42 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Highway 16 west at Fort  Fraser remains closed in the wake of this morning’s fatal single-vehicle accident in that community.

Sgt Al Steinhauser with North District Traffic services told 250 News at 12:30 this afternoon that RCMP officers are still at the accident scene investigating the circumstances and evidence involved in the accident.

Sgt Steinhauser says a car containing two people left the highway and crashed into a power pole at 2:36 this morning.  Alcohol and speed are being considered as contributing factors.  A male passenger in the car was killed while the driver was rushed to St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof with serious injuries.

Sgt Steinhauser says that person is still alive and being treated in Vanderhoof.  He is not releasing the gender of that person at this time.  He says both occupants of the car remained in the vehicle, neither was ejected.

Highway 16 has been closed to all transport vehicles since the time of the accident.  Passenger vehicle traffic has been able to detour.  Sgt Steinhauser stated at 12:30pm “we’re expecting the road to be open to single-lane, alternating traffic probably within the next 90 minutes”, which would be in the vicinity of 2pm today.

The names and home town(s) of the victims have not been released as the investigation continues.

on phone now with my trucker hubby – road still closed!!!!! hundreds of trucks are stopped!! it’s been 11 hours now since this accident – single vehicle accident that left the road and highway is still closed??!! those guys stuck there are getting madder by the minute – can’t say i blame them

Hundreds of truckers in close proximity…making it BC’s newest and by far largest whine producing area:P

I would think that an accident reconstuction officer would have to brought in from PG or Smithers adding to the normal delay when an accident involves a fatality.

I remember being in a highway closure years ago due to a mudslide. The fellow truckers knew there was nothing to be done about it so they just made the best of their time.
Miles of trucks in either direction too. It was really nice to be on the road again with pretty well all professionals.
I’m a little surprised there are not more detours for incidents like this.

A delay of this length due to a fatal MVI in the lower mainland wouldn’t happen. Sparrow, go visit a local truck stop and spew your garbage. Keyboard coward.

Sparrow is exactly right. As for Dumbfounded, comparing the LMD to a two lane, northern BC highway is comparing apples to oranges. MULTIPLE alternate routes as opposed to one, and in some cases no alternate route. And a traffic reconstructionist in the LMD doesn’t have to travel in some cases five to six hours just to GET to the collision, never mind investigate it. This is a part of being a trucker in the north. Drive long enough, and you will encounter a delay like this.

Open the door …smell booze, take a picture…get traffic moving nothing to see just a Dead drunk…Opps was passanger drunk too….they were killed and the drunk driver lives again….to do it again some other day!!Smoke and fly you arrive alive….
