Highway 16 Claims Another Life

Monday, October 5, 2015 @ 10:09 AM

Houston, B.C. – One person is dead following a high speed collision involving a motorcycle and a pick-up truck on Highway 16.

Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen of “E” Division Communication Services says the crash occurred just after 5:30 last night.

He says an investigation revealed a pick-up truck was turning left onto Morice River Road from Highway 16 when it was struck by an approaching motorcycle.

Vermeulen says the operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene while the occupants of the pick-up were not injured.

Highway 16 was closed in both directions for several hours to allow investigators to deal with the aftermath of the crash and process the scene.

He says preliminary indications are that speed may have played a factor in the tragedy.

It’s the fourth person to die on Highway 16 in less than a week.

Two elderly women were killed last Monday in a single vehicle crash near McBride while another person was killed in a single vehicle crash at Fort Fraser Saturday morning.

That’s an interesting spin. Makes it sound like it was the motorcyclist’s fault.

RIP rider.

My perspective (and I know the area well due to living in Telkwa and visiting Houston lots)that the pickup driver did not see the speedy motorcyclist coming over the bridge and around the corner just before the intersection and turned left. The motorcyclist did not have time to stop due to speeding fast. I would say it should be the motorcyclist fault due to excessive speed but legally, probably will be the pick up drivers fault due to the motorcyclist having the right of way.

DPJ
were you there? how do you know the biker was speeding? know a cop? saw a video tape? maybe the guy was doing the limit and a blindass didn’t see him. happens in town at 50k. nice assumption. lets wait to see the investigation. I have never seen so many traffic experts on one site, (not just this accident, for all the brainiacs come out after any fender bender). maybe leave the computer and go apply at the cop station

“He says preliminary indications are that speed may have played a factor in the tragedy.” It’s possible DPJ is getting his extrapolation of events from this police statement. Unlikely it was the truck turning left that was the speed factor. Sometimes motorcycles are to blame, – and I’ve got over 100,000 km on a bike – so this isn’t anti-bike bias talking. The world passes by pretty quick at 180 km an hour – a squirrel can kill you.

When one is slowly moving in order to make a left hand turn and the other is driving the speed limit. Is speeding an issue????. Most MC deaths are a result of the car/ truck making left hand turns. And it is the driver of the car that is at fault because he didn’t see the MC or the person riding it.

mtnloverxtreme,
So True!
