Complaint About Tattoo Artist Sparks Warning From Northern Health
Prince George, B.C. – Thinking of getting a tattoo?
If yes, then be sure to take the proper precautions as tattoo artists are not a regulated profession in B.C.
That’s the message from Northern Health today after they were recently made aware of a complaint about someone operating in the northwest.
“Once the RCMP is done with their work we will follow up as appropriate,” said Dr. Raina Fumerton, Northern Health’s northwest medical health officer. “We know there may be others operating inappropriately in the region.”
She says that’s why it’s important to ensure the tattoo operator and or the facility is clean and safe.
“A legitimate tattoo artist would have, if they have a facility that was permitted, have a business license and a copy of the last inspection report from Northern Health showing the approval,” says Fumerton.
“If they misplaced their inspection report, a person can contact Northern Health to determine if the artist is in compliance or not.”
And for artists that don’t have an actual facility?
“You’d look at things like cleanliness, if overall it doesn’t look clean it’s probably not.”
She says safe and clean tattoo service providers are held to a high standard (with annual inspections) to help prevent the transmission of bloodborne diseases including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
Fumerton says people can also experience bacterial skin infections, allergic reactions, scar tissue, or small knots or bumps if the appropriate health precautions are not taken.
