Unemployment Rate Jumps Year over Year in Prince George

Prince George, B.C. – Statistics Canada says there’s been an increase in the year over year unemployment rate for Prince George.
“For Prince George we had about 48,000 people working in September compared with 52,000 a year ago in September 2014,” says labour market analyst Vincent Ferrao. “So this decline has pushed the unemployment rate up from 4.9% to 7.3%.”
He says the biggest employment drops were seen in the educational services and natural resource sectors.
Ferrao also notes the unemployment rate in Prince George was higher than both the provincial average of 6.3% and the national rate of 7.1%.

Call Bond and Morris.. the hard working MPs to find out what they can do about the unemployment in PG.
Call Zimmer and Harper.
Harper’s economic action plan at work. Worst growth in the G7.
What exactly are “educational services”? Enrollment has dropped and schools have closed so is there anyone out there needing these “services”?

7% is nothing – Vote NDP and you can double that.
Educational services … administrators as well as teachers and teaching assistants, and custodial staff I would presume.
UI reports are based on categories described in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Canada
section 61 defines Educational Services
The subsector 611 consists of:
6111 – Elementary and secondary schools
6112 – Community colleges and C.E.G.E.P.s
6113 – Universities
6114 – Business schools and computer and management training
6115 – Technical and trade schools
6116 – Other schools and instruction
6117 – Educational support services
There are more detailed explanations under each
6117, for example, includes
• curriculum development, educational
• educational counselling
• educational testing services
• student exchange programs
• vocational counselling (except rehabilitation)
“Enrollment has dropped and schools have closed so is there anyone out there needing these “services”?”
I presume those who are still left need the services.
Of course, what happens if there is less money due to revenue cuts from governments, such as transfer payments from the feds, boards and administrators start to cut costs by squeezing staffing for more efficiencies or reducing the frills, if any, and working to minimum rather than standard or best practices.
The same thing holds for those who would normally use private services. We know that feds have rearranged the taxation system so that the rich keep getting richer and the middle class takes the brunt of that. That has resulted in the middle class borrowing more money and the debts this country owes are slowing down in the public sector but increasing in the private sector.
The middle class, in general, uses less services in order to cut costs, including educational services.
The areas still dependent on the resource industry are faring the worst under those conditions.
Vote in the NDP and watch the unemployment sky rocket. No need for daycares then smoking mirrors.

Of course, but at a reduced level which may account for the increased unemployment level in that sector.
Canadian middle class is among the highest paid of some 20 Countries in the Western Hemisphere. In fact it surpassed the USA in 2010 and has probably risen since then. Middle class income has increased some 19.7% since 2000.
Canada had an exceptional rebound from the global recession compared to most other Countries, and this certainly helped the situation.
One has to wonder if income is the problem, or is money management the problem. In any event you will naturally have less people working in the education system, if you have less people in the education system.
As I said before. Reducing money in transfer payments to the Provinces is the only way the Federal Government can control Provincial spending. The Federal Government is not a money machine for excessive spending by less that stellar Provincial Governments.
The same applies to Regional or Municipal Governments. They all need to be re-educated in how to be fiscally responsible with tax dollars. That in itself would be a huge project, and could (at least in the short term) create a few jobs in the educational system.
Small business has really suffered in northern BC under the provincial BC Liberals (should be called conservative), and the Federally conservatives. Small business failure rates have increased significantly in the last 10 years.
Should be called conservatives ? They are the same old social credit party . Krustys root has even been transplanted into socred soil in the OK . The so called conservatives in Ottawa are also misnamed . They don’t conserve anything .
Kind of ironic that the “Todd Doherty” banner was boldly and directly above the headline “Unemployment Jumps”.
If I was Todd’s campaign team I might ask for better positioning to avoid indirect correlation!!

Seems pretty appropriate to me. Thanks Tories for being ineffective for our riding once again.

A bit of a stretch to blame the government for people not having kids and for the pine beetle.
Seems to me there is an inordinate number of public sector employees centered in Prince George, from Municipal all the way to Federal. Which says to me the government(s) has done quite a bit to keep people employed in PG.
Good point axman. People forget what it was like before we had the University, the CRA, Northern Health. A lot of government pay cheques in this town to smooth out the ups and downs of the resource sector.
ski51, the problem with all of those many, many government paycheques is that we have to pay all of them, in good times AND in bad!
