Prince George, B.C. – Parts of British Columbia are bracing for bad weather this weekend and in some areas B.C. Hydro crews have already been pressed into action.

The Prince Rupert area is expecting winds of 80 to 110 km/h tonight, Terrace and Kitimat can expect between 15 and 25 millimetres of rain and winds of 50 to 70 km/h and Prince George is forecast to have 60 to 80 km/h winds tonight, 40 to 60 km/h on Saturday.  Fortunately the wind will be from the south.

B.C. Hydro reports power outages affecting 581 customers in Williams Lake, 16 customers in Prince George, 364 in Burns Lake, 8 in Houston, 73 in Telkwa, 115 in Smithers, 205 in Terrace and 11 in Port Edward.

There are Hydro lines down in some areas, trees across power lines in others.

It is about time that those cables be placed underground and the utility poles removed.

Underground costs 3 to 10 times more than overhead and even more in established neighbourhoods. You willing to pay?

Or you could have a back up plan . Then it doesn’t matter wether the grid is up and running or not .

some places do need to be converted to underground cables, the cost of paying for repairs as well as the cost of actual power disruption exceeds the cost of making the change. the hydro increases have nothing to do with making these changes for residents or businesses, it is about paying for run of the river projects and site C, neither of which benefit people here in Prince George

Another reason to vote NDP in the upcoming election. This stuff will magically pay for itself.

ataloss – are you talking about backup for individual homes, like solar-powered batteries, or something larger scale? The latter would be affected by the grid, albeit at a smaller granularity than currently.

Ataloss how about telling us about your backup plan? That mysterious solar system of yours.

Yes bill , I’m talking about backing up your home and or business . I’m out in the country . We’ve gone up to three days with out power from the grid . Further north they’ve gone over a week . Without a backup system life can get pretty miserable after a few days . These grid failers are only going to become more frequent and longer . With every long grid failer , more and more people are opting for a back up system . Used to be that when the grid failed we’d be the only ones with the lights on , internet/wifi working , TV , coffee on and a few or the neighbours devices being charged . Now we see more of our neighbours looking after themselves .

Ataloss the grid didn’t fail a feeder or portion tripped out. Hydro has never guaranteed power 27/7.

So just what is this wonderful backup system you have. I have seen lots of talk but no details.

Oh by the wY I have a generater, fuel and a food reserve.
