Doherty Says Victory Feels ‘Surreal’

Prince George, BC – Cariboo-Prince George Conservative winner Todd shared a message of thanks to his campaign workers and those who voted for him.
In an emotionally charged speech to the supporters and volunteers who worked on his campaign, Doherty said it has been a lot of work , and a long campaign. He has actually been campaigning since last fall when he won the Conservative nomination in the riding.
Doherty acknowledged the race in his riding was a close one, and a tough one to call. While the polls closed at 7, it would be 10:20 before he and his family would make their way to the Coast Inn of the North to meet with his campaign team.. “It feels surreal right now. As much as you work for it, and practice, everyday you’re working tirelessly at it, when you get the call that you’re the one, it’s still surreal.”
Doherty says tomorrow, he plans to take his dog for a nice long walk, and acknowledged that he and the other candidates are tired. While saying he expects to make some mistakes along the way, he promised to work every day for the people of the riding.

So our two North and South PG ridings are still without effective representation in Ottawa! Before, under Harper, they were not allowed to have any input with the one-man-show Harper, and now they are on the opposition benches facing a strong majority Liberal government! The opposition can scream and holler all it wants! The government can ignore them if it chooses to do so!
Well done!
It feels surreal to me that Cariboo-PG is sending yet another inarticulate and ineffective representative to Ottawa. About 65% of us voted for others but split the vote; hence the Tory. The good news is we took our country back, even though we didn’t take our riding back.

Another 4 years of who cares for our riding :(
Actually what happened is the Eastern Establishment is back in power, and the West is on the outside looking in.
Talk of taking our Country back is meaningless. The Country never went anywhere. At least with Harper and the Conservatives the West was in. Doesn’t look like we are anymore.
We will have to see how this all plays out. Should be interesting.
Canada most certainly went the way of the Alliance and the Reform. We did not have the Progressive Conservative Party of old. We did not have the right of Centre Party of Diefenbaker and those who followed him.
Atlantic Canada voted solid Liberal … 32 seats …. they know what a PC party stands for.
Alliance and Reform have more in common with the religious right of the USA than anything from Canada.
They have around 100 seats. That gives them enough to be an effective opposition. But first they have to have a leadership race, which ought to be interesting. Perhaps they have someone that is a bit more compassionate than Harper.
In 2011 the Liberals had no effective leader. In the same year the NDP had the best leader they have had for some time if not best of all time.
Neither of the two parties had any succession plans. Neither do the Conservatives have a succession plan. Harper would not hear of that, I am sure.
Yes, Canada did get lost. Over the last 10 years it was not the Canada I grew up in, that is for sure.
Actually what happened is the Eastern Establishment is back in power, and the West is on the outside looking in.”
The West could do something about that. Just think, rather than the Atlantic provinces being all red, and the west being all blue … and Ontario and Quebec being all spotted with red blue and orange …. (BC looks like it is trying to do that and even has a spot of green) … the whole country could be spotted with parties scattered all over the place rather than being regional.
It has gone back to Urban versus Rural …. The hinterlands are blue with some smattering of orange … the urban areas are red with orange in the core areas that are not jet gentrified.
Regional differences expressing themselves in political parties is very dangerous, in my opinion. It nurtures thoughts of separation, thoughts of segregation. Parties must integrate programs to respond to regional differences rather than allowing splinters such as Alliance and Reform to develop. Pretty soon we will be like Italy with political parties for every day of the year.
PG …. us idiots were supposed to vote strategically ….. apparently a lot of you didn’t get that that meant Liberal …. thanks NDP/Green idiots …. you helped elect another Conservative
Thanks to all the candidates who ran. My candidate did not win. Todd do us proud.Earn my vote next election.
Well he will have a great chance to define himself. One hopes he maintains his integrity and genuinely works to bring attention to the issues that will arise over the next four years in PG Cariboo.
I think Doherty has shown class in how he deals with people, and that is a sign of what one expects from their representative. I think the trust factor though is earned and part of the trust factor is not being absent for votes in parliament, and talking to all sides within the riding, which means showing up and being available (something he lacked in the election missing some of the debates).
I hope he can bring some money to the riding for highway improvements.
