Prince George, B.C.-  The  proposed improvements to the Cpl Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park  have been  greeted with  smiles.

The  plan for the  park at Dagg Road  in the Hart area of Prince George,  would  see a picnic/bar-b-q area,  playground, upgraded  sport court,  open space, and the long dreamed of skatepark.

Jason MacMillan of NewSkate, the company which  has developed two  different concepts for the skatepark  portion of the park ,  says the overall design  had  to meet  many objectives “We wanted to  pay homage to Darren Fitzpatrick, capture the essence of the Hart, and make the park  accessible,  casual,  appropriate for all  ages and seasons and low maintenance”.

At the core of the design, is a stylized poppy,  and from it, are pathways leading to the  other park  features.  There are also  trails linking the features.

skatepark6Cpl. Fitzpatrick’s mother, Colleen  ( shown in photo at right looking at the overall plan)says she is  pleased with the  outline presented to members of the community last night “One thing for us as a family  of course, was making it multi-generational for the  community, and then for us to maintain the remembrance  theme, the freedom theme, and it looks like that has been incorporated, it hasn’t been forgotten.  My understanding it was the  youth group that made the suggestions so that’s really exciting.  But just to see it all laid out is very cool ”

The two  different concepts for the skatepark portion offer different features.  Concept 1,  has more  street  terrain with ledges and drops  plus a bowl area while Concept two  offers more of a bowl feature than the street features.  Skaters were split on which one they liked best with some  favouring the hard edges, rails and stairs of  Concept one, while others like the free flow bowl options provided in concept 2.

The  City is working with the Rotary clubs of Prince George and the Hart Community Association  to make the skatepark project happen.  While no firm numbers  have been decided yet ,  Mayor Lyn Hall   says he believes the  ballpark figure was in the $400 thousand dollar range.  Of course it will all depend on  which  final  skatepark design is chosen.  Mayor Hall says one thing is clear,  the  whole park needs to be developed  “The piece we’re talking about ( the City) is the Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery park portion  of this and it’s important for our staff to make sure we don’t lose sight of that .  It’s an important piece,  it  represents and identifies Darren Fitzpatrick, it’s a memorial in his honour,  and it’s as important as the skatepark in our  eyes.  As we develop the skateboard park, we would make the improvements to the Darren Fitzpatrick Park as well.”

I wonder if they are PUMPED enough to come up with some cash out of their own pockets to help pay for it?
Thought not!

Good to see some forward movement on this!

@bcracer

Because I’m sure parks and public facilities you used as a kid or teenager, such as ice rinks, swimming pools and parks, were all built with cash that you personally supplied. Try taking your brain out of neutral before operating a keyboard.

Shouldn’t have added parks for a second time in that comment. I was originally going to add libraries. No way to edit it out now.

Dumb comment Racer…part of paying taxes is to create opportunities that improve society as a whole. I’m sure your share of this park (about the cost of a coffee and a donut at Tim’s) will be worth much more to you than replacing your smashed car window, or paying to repaint a graffiti scrawled school, that get targeted by bored teen vandals.

I’d much rather the young people had some free opportunities to keep active and keep them out of trouble!

bcr…banged yer head again I see…This is good monies spent!
How bout the Park.hehehe, they are gonna put downtown..for familys and Crackheads and junkies..I bet Lyn and crew will be there each morning cleaning up the NEEDLES and Crap…left behind….so this can be leveled in time too…Councel=BDF’s…..

I am glad to see this idea progressing, and proud that a theme of remembrance and freedom is planned to be incorporated.

Where does the current playground fit into this?

Where does the current playground fit into this?

The existing playground will stay as it is.

ohhhhhh personal attacks… only idiots resort to that.

So I guess that makes you one since you just attacked anyone who was critical of your initial comment.

Hahaha, I never mentioned anyone so there was no personal attack.
You want to debate a point, I am more than game…I don’t resort to personal attacks as I have more pride in myself that to drop that low.

and for all the mouthpieces, never once in my life has anyone ever paid for my personal activities nor do I want them to.
yes been to the pool, paid my admission like everyone else, never asked you to pay for me.
If I want something special and new I would do what I could to at least come up with some of the costs and in this case they seem to figure we owe it to them.
So all I asked was if they were prepared to put out some of their own money for this.
and I doubt they will or are.

bcracer… ever been to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park (aka Fort George Park)? If so, how much did you pay to enter the site?

bcracer; “and in this case they seem to figure we owe it to them.” Just how do you infer that from the above article? From your comment above, you have never used a public space at any time in your life? What I’m reading is that as a teen, you paid for the construction & upkeep of every public place you visited? How much did you donate, taxes aside, in the building of the aquatic centre? I’m quite sure all of these teenagers parents pay taxes & are more than happy to see their tax dollars spent on a great project like this, I know I am.

Its a great idea right time, right place. There is a seniors centre nearby schools nearby, families and lots of dog walkers. Happy for the Hart!

Great, Racer, so you paid your $4 admission. So I guess when you pay your $1.75 to ride the bus you think that it too completely covers the cost of your ride???

You do realize that the admissions you pay on services like public transit, public recreation facilities, etc. are never the true cost but merely a pittance of recoup money for the government? They are always subsidized.

If you truly want to pay your full share for the cost of a massive pool complex with the brick & mortar, plumbing, pumps & chemicals, slides, other apparatus, lifeguards and admissions staff….please voluntarily drop $50 per visit so we can truly be comfortable that you are not–God forbid!–having your recreational time subsidized by us taxpayers!!
