Fate of Finning in Prince George Not Yet Known
Prince George, B.C.- Finning International has announced it will be closing eleven of its operations in Western Canada and trimming its workforce by 440 people in Canada. How the announcement will impact Finning’s operations in Prince George is not yet clear.
The company made the announcement this morning as it released its 3rd quarter results which showed new equipment sales dropped by 30% and revenue was down 10% over the same quarter in 2014 . The company says the declines are due to “a difficult economic environment and reduced demand for new equipment across all market segments.”
In a statement. Finning President and CEO Scott Thomson says “While these are difficult decisions, we believe we are taking the right path to adjust our business to market realities and ensure financial strength, while simultaneously positioning Finning to deliver customer service more effectively and efficiently over the long-term.”

Don’tcha just want to blame Harper for even encouraging the oils sands development and enabling all those oil patch jobs, and servicing companies to hire more people and place a lot of their economic futures on the success of the oil sands development.
Shame on Harper for personally causing the world wide drop in oil prices below the $50 range.
Shame on Harper for encouraging the billions of dollars in wages for good paying jobs in the oil patch.
Shame on Harper for the 65,000 oil patch jobs that have been lost because of the world wide oil price drop that he personally caused.
Shame on Harper for every single bad nasty disgusting thing that ever happened in the history of mankind.
Its all Harpers fault and if you don’t believe me…well just ask Craig Oliver or Peter Mansbridge
CBC one costly taxpayer funded joke. Sorry story hijack, but notice the barrage of climate BS and miss information they are posting leading upto the billion dollar Paris party. Wonder how many from the glass palace up the hill are riding the taxpayer carbon trail to the party? Anyone from city hall going? Bunch of rent seeking hypocrites.
According to the CBC scroll , it’s 550 .
editor’s note:
440 in Canada, 550 in South America and some in Europe.
But don’t worry notsofast. Boy Wonder will swoosh in with his red cape and big hair and make everything just swell. Wind farms and solar power and unicorns and rainbows – that’s the face of the Canadian economy in this exciting time of ‘change’. Remember, people voted for change and change is exactly what they’re going to get.
See you at Ritchies!
There was a time in our history that we needed CBC, as neutral representation, to inform the people. its radio station has enstilled a lot of Arts into our main stream. However, the underlying political views are very clear from every report. They all support left wing.
Maybe, CRTC needs to do their job, and make sure that reporting the news is done correctly, and have the reporters leave their opinion to themselves.
Their is a lot of mistrust in the media. The mistrust is far greater in the publicly funded arena than private.
CBC is just an advertising company for the Liberals and NDP.
I thought this was a story about Finning laying off people. Amazing how some people can’t seem to get over past events. Like elections.
Speaking of jobs, from what I understand, a carrot processing plant in the Maritimes has had it’s operating permit suspended/cancelled(?) by our new Minister of the Environment, effectively putting approximately 50 people out of work!
Why you might ask? Well, apparently the plant was discharging excess carrot juice into the ocean!
Dumping carrot juice into the Atlantic, excess carrot juice? This requires a suspension of economic activity at a carrot processing plant, putting approx. 50 people out of work?
This action was taken by the same Minister of the Environment that as we speak is allowing Montreal to discharge 8 Billion litres of RAW SEWAGE into the St. Lawrence River. Yup, you read that right! 8,000,000,000 litres of RAW SEWAGE from Justin’s home town is currently being dumped into the St. Lawrence River and that’s ok, but a small carrot processing plant gets shut down for discharging excess carrot juice into the Atlantic Ocean!
50 jobs currently suspended (or lost)!
I bet that when Atlantic Canada voted Liberal, they probably didn’t that the free sh*t that the Liberals were promising them would actually be 8 billion litres of raw unprocessed sh*t floating downstream towards them in the St. Lawrence River!
By the way, where is the outrage from the tree huggers, the environmentalists and the Green Party over the dumping of this raw sewage. They would have been screaming bloody murder if this was happening under the Harper Government!
And what does CBC, Global and CTV have to say about this? Absolutely nothing of a negative nature!
Un-freaking-believable!
Are all of you BUTTHURT REFORMERS going to continue to whine about the election results until October 2019??
I mean seriously! No the current economic mess is not all Harper’s doing, however at the same time you can’t lay any of this at the feet of the new PM. He’s only been on the job for 8 days! Why don’t we all just give this new government a chance to implement their platform and then comment on the results rather than being a bunch of sore losers! This whole “Chicken little” routine is getting really old, and it hasn’t even been a month since the election.
Bent, the Finning closures and layoffs are indicative of the state of our economy and the Global economy!
Those on the left had no problem whatsoever with laying blame for the global economic crisis on the Harper Government!
Those on the left had no problem whatsoever with laying blame for low oil prices on the Harper Government!
Those on the left had no problem whatsoever with laying blame for any and every layoff or facility closure on the Harper Government!
Guess you don’t remember, eh Bent? Either that or you chose not to remember!
With Justin at the helm, screwing up Canada, I suspect that there will be ample opportunity for those of us on the right to remind you of how everything that was Harper’s fault is now pretty boy Justin’s fault!
I may have not voted for trudeau, but give the kid a chance.
Let him make real mistakes, before we hammer him.
Finning issue is not new news. Sales are down, people are going to be let go. It is a fact of life. No guarantees.
All I can say is good to see Harper gone and what do you think about Victoria dumping raw sewage every day in the Ocean. I think Finning in PG will do OK.
Good point oldman…I remember my 1st swim in the ocean very well…it waz in Victoria…..@ Beacon Hill park…I waz met with Condoms and tampons…this waz 30 yrs ago and since then how many Millions of Gallons of sewage has been dumped and will continue to be dumped??/
Wow. Bitter much, people?
A few years ago, I heard a Saskatchewan Party rep proclaiming that the provincial economy was not going to be a cycle of energy prices boom and bust, but rather they had a handle on “a new way of doing business.” Surprise! He was wrong.
Sadly, until we get beyond an economy that is hardwired into oil and gas prices, this is going to happen again, and again, and again. Our politicians are only going to be able to decide how to offload the costs of this idiocy – they can’t do anything more than that. So pick your poison. But it’s still poison.
Hart guy. Victoria dumps 129 Million liters of raw sewage into the Strait of Juan de Fuca each year. Look in your own back yard first. Now who’s got nothing intelligent to say? Lol
I stand to be corrected hart guy. Victoria pumps an average of 82 million litres of raw sewage daily into waters just off Victoria’s harbour. It is pumped into our pristine ocean through two one-meter wide pipes 60 and 65 meters under the surface by twin 1000 horsepower motors.
8, that dumping has been going on for years, under the watch of both previous Conservative and Liberal Federal Governments, and also under Liberal, Socred and NDP Provincial Governments, and it has been WRONG under the watch of all of them!
Are you suggesting that because Victoria does it, that it’s somehow acceptable for Montreal to now do it as well?
Or are you suggesting that your reference to Victoria is a rather feeble attempt to deflect attention to what is now going on under the watch of your glorious Justin??
Come on 8, let’s be honest, ok?
Well to your delight the sewage is being dumped by union employees in both ends of the province. The finning layoffs are mostly union jobs. Lol
Meant to say both ends of this country.
The city of Prince Rupert also dumps raw sewage directly into their harbour and always have .
I bet that when Atlantic Canada voted Liberal, they probably didn’t that the free sh*t that the Liberals were promising them would actually be 8 billion litres of raw unprocessed sh*t floating downstream towards them in the St. Lawrence River!
========================
From what I gather, this was the best option. It’s not great, but nobody is suggesting it was. I also understand that, despite the optics, the scientists who looked at the situation had determined that it was a low risk plan given the volumes of water that flow in the St. Lawrence. It’s not exactly the Nechako we’re talking about here.
Again, its not a good situation but I don’t think there were any other feasible options on the table.
Back to Finning..
I would be very surprised if they close the PG Finning.. Layoff’s however are a very real possibility.
Reason being I don’t see them closing is because PG Finning is the central service and supplier for the whole northwest region. Anyhow given the recent volatility in the commodities markets anything can happen.
Perfect time to bring in 25k unemployed , welfare receiving Syrians.. thanks Libs!
HG:”Or are you suggesting that your reference to Victoria is a rather feeble attempt to deflect attention…?
I like to point out that the Montreal dumping is temporary (time limited) whereas the Victoria dumping has been going on for decades without proper treatment facilities being in place ever!
Comparing apples with oranges is not very smart, even when used for political purposes!
Well we have over 300,000 TFWs in Canada now. BC has 70,000 and would have to say most of them are likely being paid min wage.
I forgot to say thanks Steve
Congrats to all for staying on topic..lol
As for Finning.. Like any business who got used to oil companies buying big equipement and the parts to keep them running the huge drop in oil prices hit hard.. I hope the efforts you are taking work out for you.
Will be a long time before oil recovers.. Everyone is stockpiling because of the price.. Store it off shore in tankers till price improve. Then sell it for top,dollar..
