Cold Weather Triggers Several Alarms

Sunday, January 3, 2016 @ 4:02 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Cold temperatures in the minus 20-degree range, give or take a few degrees, can lead to unexpected problems.

Local fire crews were called out repeatedly on Saturday to respond to alarms ringing inTHERMOMETER5 locations around town.  At least three units responded to the Parkwood Place shopping centre just before 3:30pm, got staged as required and then located the source of the alarm in a restaurant.  There was no fire and crews returned to their respective halls.

However, just after 5pm the trucks were rolling to Parkwood Place again after an alarm went off in the movie theatre building.  Again that turned out to be a false alarm.

Shortly after 7pm an alarm at CN Centre drew the response of three fire units but, as in the earlier incidents, there was no fire to put out.

And firefighters were sent to an apartment building on 15th Avenue, just below the bypass, about five minutes before 8 pm over concerns about a possible situation with escaping gas.  In that case it turned out a water pipe had burst.

There is expected to be a slight improvement in temperatures over the coming week, although the wind chill this morning will be about minus 25 degrees.
