Tabor Mountain Set to Host NorAm Ski Cross
Prince George, B.C. – One of the more thrilling spectacles in sport will be on display at Tabor Mountain starting next week.
The NorAm Ski Cross starts Friday and chief of race for the event Jim Martin says it’s not to be missed.
“It really is thrilling, it’s a good spectator sport and certainly we’re very pleased to be able to hold this particular event,” he says, adding the calibre of competition will be high.
“The level of competitors, if you’re not familiar with ski racing, would be the equivalent to the WHL as far as the level of competitors in hockey. These athletes are looking to make the next step up to the World Cup and national team status.”
As many as 40 participants are expected to participate, including Prince George Ski Club members Tiana Gairns and Gavin Rowell. Tiana is a member of Alpine Canada’s Ski Cross NextGen Prospect Group and Gavin is currently training with the Okanagan FIS Ski Team in Kelowna.
“We should also see people from Western Canada and the Western United States,” adds Martin. “And they will be as young as 16, but the majority will likely be in their late teens and early 20s.”
He also notes it’s the first time Prince George has held such an event.
“It is. It’s the first time we’ve been able to. It’s one of those legacy pieces from the Canada Winter Games and of course we wouldn’t be doing it if the Canada Winter Games weren’t here because of the investment in the infrastructure and what not.”
It all takes place January 15-17. Training goes Thursday and Friday, with time trials, heats and finals taking place on both Saturday and Sunday.

This is great. Tabor has a lot of potential.
I do wish that the owner would step up to the plate though and fix a few key problems. There are a couple major issues that are related to saftey of the chair lift. The first is his use of 1×4 spf boards to replace broken seat slats. They cake with ice and from time to time break when you sit on them. I don’t know how he got by the canada games on this one or min safety standards for that matter.
Second are the safety bars they often get stuck and cannot be pulled down. They dont get stuck because of ice but because the bumpers that catch on the top are worn out. I was there a couple weeks ago and everytime I ended up on chair #12 this happened. Don’t know how the safety authority has not got after them for either of these issues.
The last issue is just a complaint that is grooming during business hours or just not grooming enough. If you want an example of the right way to do it look at powder king. Grooming is at night and top notch.
I don’t mean to complain but there are issues at this hill that should be dealt with. Some of these issues are not costly fixes but just the cost of doing business.
I will continue to ski tabor as it is nice close.
Did you approach the owner?
These are things that have been going on for at least years. He is aware of the problems. I point it out to the lifties all the time. Everyone knows nobody cares.
Businesses are aloud to make poor decisions but the chair lift issues seem like safety concerns that should be adressed.
