Coliseum Has New Name
Prince George, B.C.- The Home of the Spruce Kings, will no longer be called the Prince George Coliseum. The downtown arena is now, the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena
The name change comes as the City of Prince George and the Prince George Spruce Kings Junior A Hockey Club signed a five-year agreement which will see the long time local company pay $25 thousand to $30 thousand a year to the Spruce Kings and the City , and between $15 and $20 thousand dollars worth of concrete for the Spruce Kings Lottery show home, as well as $10,000.
“This arrangement supports a well-established, successful, and community-owned sports team while providing funds that can be allocated to the continuing maintenance of the Coliseum, which was built in the mid-1950s,” says City Manager Kathleen Soltis.
“Rolling Mix Concrete is excited to embark on this new journey with our community partners: the City of Prince George and the Spruce Kings,” says John Paolucci, Rolling Mix Concrete’s President and CEO. “Rolling Mix Concrete takes great pride in helping the community and organizations that support us.”
“Rolling Mix has been locally owned and operated for more than 50 years and they have been a long-time supporter of junior hockey in our community,” says Spruce Kings President Tom Bohmer, a former Spruce Kings player himself. “The Spruce Kings organization is more than 40 years old and we feel that there are three critical ingredients that explain our success to date: terrific and loyal fans, entertaining hockey, and creative partnerships like this one that we have with a local business as well as with the City.”

Its a step backwards.
Drop the Concrete just Rolling Mix will do sounds dumb with concrete in there
Thank you Rolling Mix for your support but changing the name of the building makes no sense to me. If they were to buy the building I would have to say put any name on it you want. Does the taxpayers of PG not have any say in this? Did city council take a course on name changing? Whats next rename PG to Pulp City.
It’s free money for the City and advertising for the Company. Win-win.
Tweak this….Pulease!!
Awesome investment from Rolling Mix. As a rec hockey player I can appreciate anyone who is willing to contribute to our arenas. As for the haters, maybe you can leave your mom’s basement and move to Quesnel, and live happily ever after? What a bunch of tools we have in this town. They protest private investment, and don’t bat an eyelash at horrific municipal spending in this town. Just awful.
Recognition of a company supporting something can be given in many other ways without having to change the name of a building. Are we going to change the name of every place every time someone makes a donation? I think someone has been putting to much cement in their breakfast cereal to come up with these ideas.
I’m not completely against corporate sponsorship or renaming of the building. I just think this is a cumbersome unpleasant sounding name… perhaps the official name could be “the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena” and the people of prince george could nickname it something else. Like how GM PLace was nicknamed “the Garage”.
We could call it “the Brickhouse” or “the Pillar” as a friend of mine suggested.
Oldman1: This is a 5 year sponsorship agreement, not a one time donation. At the end of the 5 year agreement Rolling Mix will no doubt have an option to extend the agreement if they desire. Some other company may come in with a sweeter offer or it will simply revert back to being the Prince George Coliseum.
Based on what I saw the last time I attended a Spruce Kings game, Rolling Mix has been making the skates for the team this year.
Rolling Joe, will be proud to have this. Good job boys.
Jeepers, was there this much squawking when CN got their name on the other ice arena?
Axman… best laugh of the day. Thx.
Hammer—don’t get me wrong here. I love the game of hockey and think Rolling Mix is a great company but I am not in favor of changing the name. At the end of the five yr term we may have to call it something other than the PG coliseum. When you start changing a well known name to the public in town and out they are going to say where the hell is that and we don’t need the Spruce Kings which are a great team renamed cement heads.
“Whats next rename PG to Pulp City.” I prefer Jimmyville or even better Pattison City. Then we are covered for the mills, grocery stores, etc. that Jim Pattison owns in town. I wonder what he would pay for this dubious honor?
It could be Rolling Mix Concrete Coliseum. That way after 5 years it’s still the Coliseum.
In theory its all good, but the name sure doesn’t roll off the tongue.
Name change at least its a donation not like Fort George Park costing the taxpayers. Maybe Murray should have made a donation.
Thank you Rolling Mix Concrete. That is a big commitment.
In keeping with the acronym CN, we could consider RMC Coliseum. That way the people will think it is the Royal Military College’s home arena. :-)
I wonder how quickly people will take to the long name …. we are going to the Coliseum is something that roles off the tongue quickly. That is the way it will likely stay except in official advertising.
Hopefully there will not be a renewal of the lease since the building has seen better days and needs to be replaced one of these days.
No problem recognizing naming rights for an arean. But why not just “Rolling Mix Coliseum” so: 1-it’s still the Coliseum, and 2-it isn’t such a mouthful.
Why all the negative comments? This is awesome news for one of our local hockey teams. Thank you Rolling Mix for your generous donation. It’s commitment like yours that keep prices affordable to watch entertaining hockey. Sure the team is struggling a bit this season. But the team is young and with support like this from local business and us the fans. We can help bring a positive attitude to the team.
PG’s finest will complain about anything, what a bunch of unproductive, unappreciative tools in this town. What exactly do you think Rolling Mix is getting out of this? Do you understand how many businesses give back in this community, in hopes of getting some recognition at times? Do you know how many things Rolling Mix have sponsered in this community? Get a grip , thank a local business sometimes.
Good job Rolling Mix, thanks for being involved in this community.
I dont mind them selling naming rights considering this deal. Rolling Mix may call it whatever they like for that kind of contribution to the team AND the facilty.
I do agree that the proposed name should retain the designation of “colliseum”.
Also, this company has a vested interest in our community, considering they have a hand in many of the foundations that created this town. I suspect that this naming rights deal will span longer than 5 yrs.
He Spoke: Rolling Joe would be proud!..you’re right!
Rolling Mix Concrete Arena, is located East of CN Centre, and East of the University Hospital of Northern BC, East of Kordyban Lodge, and East of the Curt Garland Community Support Centre, and West of the LHeidli T’enneh park. Have fun finding it.
And no, this is not a cement arena for roller skating.
Rolling Mix and the Paolucci Families have been very generous in the community over the years. So what if its called Rolling Mix Concrete Arena. Local Family business supporting local sports, get over it!!!!!
The RMCA is a great place to take the kids to watch some good hockey. Thanks Rolling Mix!
This is completely ridiculous. Its always been the Prince George Coliseum for over 60 years now. Its a grand name and an historical land mark.
Its one thing to name a new building, but to go around renaming old historical land marks for a few dimes in donation is down right disrespectful of the historical value to the community. This is a city council that has no respect for PG’s history.
Essentially the foundation is a gift in kind… so $15,000 in kind is that at the going rate, operating cost, materials cost… ect ect….
So essentially its a $10,000 donation. The 50/50 winner got more than that at the last Cougars game… and they gave away a car worth twice that amount.
$10,000 is essentially the equivalent of having 40 people in the seats per game. I would argue not having the team with the worst record in the league would get more than 40 people in the stands.
This deal is about as good for the city of PG and the Spruce Kings as is their place in the standings.
So much for the openness from city council. If this deal was in the works for 3 yrs this is the first I have heard of this. As I have said before recognition of a company donation can be done in many other ways without having to change the name on a building. How are we going to come up with a name for Theater Northwest which many people donate?
