Unemployment Up
Prince George, B.C.- The unemployment rate in January climbed by 2.2 percentage points in Prince George over the same month a year ago.Last month, the rate was 6.4% up from 4.2% in January of 2015. There were 46,500 employed in Prince George last month, down from the 50,200 who were working in P.G. n January of 2015.
It is a similar story for the Cariboo region, the January 2016 rate climbed to 7.9%, up nearly 3 points from he 5% rate recorded in January of 2015. Statistics Canada analyst Vincent Ferrao says the most significant job losses were in the natural resource sector, as there had been 8,100 working in that sector in January of last year, compared to 5,200 last month.
Provincially, the rate climbed to 6.6% last month, up from 5.6% a year ago. Ferrao says the climb reflects an increase in the labour market and more people actively looking for a job as the labour force in B.C. increased by 48,600 .
Nationalluy the rate of unemployment increased to 7.2%, up from 6.6% in January of 2015.
