Province toughens up drinking and driving law

Wednesday, February 10, 2016 @ 12:58 PM

Prince George, B.C. – There will be more at stake  for  drivers found to be driving under the influence.

Drivers who receive a 90 Day IRP or accumulate points through  repeat alcohol and drug related driving events, will be required to  participate in remedial programs.

The new regulations will also  impact drivers caught driving while affected  by drugs or alcohol who accumulate between 6-16 remedial program  points within five years.

There is no reconsideration process for mandatory referrals

Once a mandatory referral is made, drivers will be required to  participate in the Responsible Driver Program (RDP), which focuses on  education and counselling, and/or the Ignition Interlock Program  (IIP), for which a device is installed in the vehicle to prevent  drivers from driving if they have consumed alcohol.

“These measures will help both deter and prevent unsafe drivers from  getting back on our roads” says Solicitor General Mike Morris, “There will no longer be financial or  hardship considerations to exempt high-risk drivers from these
remedial programs.”

Minister Morris adds “Let me be clear. If you are caught drinking and driving and  therefore putting your life and the lives of others at risk, it will  cost you. Driving while affected by alcohol or drugs is reckless and  selfish behaviour for which this province has no tolerance.”

What about the texting and cell phone drivers?

Are they not, as great a menace as drunk drivers.

Is the minster going to increase the penalty for distracted driving?

I would hope so.

As I understand past media reports, the new penalty for distracted driving is coming out in the next couple of months. Just hoping that it runs a close second to the first offense for impaired.

So they will doing Spot checks at concerts, hockey, and any other event that allows Booze at city run Venues….

Just in case you missed the part that says “caught driving while affected by DRUGS or alcohol” Just as guilty if you are high on pot or drunk on beer or messed on meth. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

      Or yer Pharmas….

To: Editor….been to a concert lately??

Be cause I said City run Venues?? Its the frick’n truth…next time I’ll take Pictures to post on Facebook then we’ll see…..

If politicians really cared they would restore the drinking age back to 21. Worked very well in the US but its about votes not lives hey Christy, May.

While something is better than nothing, this amounts to just a tiny step in the right direction. Logical One is right, this should include distracted driving ie: talking/texting on cell phones.

As for monitoring drinking at City run venues, I believe that they should make a return to “beer gardens” and have road checks at the exit of the parking lots. See far too many at these events consuming vast amounts at their seats and causing other paying event-goers headaches. How many are driving after… not certain, but see many in the stands who must tolerate irresponsible drinking.

I just pointed that out and Got Deleted..Hmmmmm.

I would hope that this would eliminate officer discretion as well, especially for class 7 drivers. If these are nipped in the bud it may well go a long way in making better drivers out of them.

And yes, I think it should be applicable to distracted driving as well.

Turn the cell phone off or put it way out of reach when driving. If its an important call, then pull over and stop.

Its really not that hard.

Such a waste of air and time, as I walk my dog every single day and evening in PG, and absolutely fear for my life every minute along our roads and highways that I am out their! So kiss my ass with every single useless law you liberals pass, as I have zero respect for your authority these days!

Then stay off the darn center line, LOL!

    Here,here…PPP..

Waiting for the Wife at the Collage Heights Shopping Center, seen a Women in a Pickup
driving in, 1 Hand she held a Smoke in the other a very large Coffee and a Dog in the Cab. I really enjoy coming into Town to People watch! Please give her a few Month off from Driving, she is so busy!

    Best show is Wallies….

250complainers.com is what this site should be called.

The ignition interlock is hugely flawed, it needs video capability as well. I know a person who actually brags that she gets her 13 year old kid to blow into it when she needs to make a beer run. She thinks it’s funny and all that but if I knew when it was going on for sure the RCMP would be getting a call.

I think they clamp down on failure and improper use of signals, according to a new study in the us it is double distracted driving in cause of accidents!

It’s a step in the right direction folks, is that not better than nothing?
