Police Put “Johns” on Notice

Saturday, February 27, 2016 @ 4:23 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The RCMP in Prince George are cracking down on the people involved in the sex trade in the city, both providers of sexual services and the people who pay for those services.

During last Tuesday’s Queensway community discussion with senior brass of the RCMP, reported exclusively by 250 News in the story available here, a prevalent complaint revolved around prostitution, related criminal activities and the dangers posed to those in the community by the customers who prey upon the sex trade workers.

The Prince George RCMP say that while those in the audience Tuesday night did not provide a solution to help the women working their neighbourhood streets, “all agreed that the customers, those who prey upon and take advantage of them (referred to as “Johns”) should be targeted in some fashion.”  “We heard the community concerns loud and clear and are committed to focus our enforcement initiatives on the deterrence of sexual procurement in our streets and neighbourhoods.”

Noting that the Criminal Code states it is illegal to communicate for sexual services in any public place or motor vehicle, the RCMP says “should someone be observed committing this offense, it is very possible and likely they may be arrested and charged criminally.”

“If a person is charged criminally, and the matter is before the courts, that person’s identity is a matter of public record.  Release conditions could also be unfavourable to some as it could compromise employment, personal reputation and restrict freedoms.”

And to make their intentions absolutely clear the police say “to ensure the safety of not only residents but also the safety of vulnerable people, the RCMP will be making deliberate efforts to arrest people who compromise the safety of our residents.”

Now we just need to find a way to help the women caught up in this life. Maybe a treatment center?

The game isn’t just played by women but it’s still just a tiny minority of people involved . It’s so tiny that it’s generally only a little area that is effected but for those little areas it must be a nightmare .

How about starting with the men? It is the men who are the target under the new law.

The Harper Government’s thinking was that if it was illegal to buy sex while decriminalizing the act of providing sex, that we could get rid of prostitution.

The new law has been in place for just over a year. It has hardly been tested yet in the courts. We are about to put it to a test here.

Good luck. Based on surveys, the Scandinavians, who pioneered the law, have not been able to make a dent.

The issue is safety of the women and the public in general. There are several models in the world for providing as much safety as possible. This is not one of them. It has come under fire by the sex workers for that reason.

Seems to me we had this same situation a number of years ago, and it was the intention to name the Johns or post their license plates. In any event whatever it was did not work to well.

The residents in the neighborhood also complained about the drugs and crack houses. Are we taking immediate action on that issue??

Just legalize it. Seams to work in Nevada.

“We heard the community concerns loud and clear and are committed to focus our enforcement initiatives on the deterrence of sexual PROCURMENT in our streets and neighbourhoods.” Interesting that the RCMP are focussing only on those who would purchase sex (the Johns), but NOT on those who are offering / soliciting sex (the Prostitutes)… yet this is consistent with the previous government’s changes made to Canada’s prostitution law where it is illegal to buy sex, but perfectly legal to offer / solicit sex.

So if anyone is confused about why it was OK for Nigel Wright to “offer” a bribe, but illegal for Mike Duffy to “take” that bribe… just apply some Conservative logic. ;-)

Conswervatives world is indeed bizarro world . If you don’t like the message , just assinate the messenger .

Legalize it ,same a the weed issue. And get them chickens approved.Same difference.

The RCMP in conjunction with the Northern John Howard Society and others, used to offer a “John School”, which was a one-day orientation/sensitization program for men caught in prostitution stings. These men had to meet certain conditions (e.g., no outstanding warrants for violence offenses or prior sex crime convictions) and had to be interviewed and deemed suitable, but could avoid a criminal record, which would be accompanied by having their name added to the sex crimes registry. If caught a second time, I seem to recall that they would face both charges.
This program has had success in some jurisdictions in BC but there doesn’t seem to be any explanation available for why it was stopped in PG.

Could have been stopped in PG because too many high profile individuals were getting caught in the net.

High profile individuals trolling the red light districts for street walkers , really ? What a absurd notion . You must also believe in high profile individuals dumpster diving . You crack me up !!!!

You cannot end the purchase of sex as long as Cell Phones are in existence. The days of driving the streets looking for sex are long gone.

Treat the women for they are the ones dependent on the money earned from selling sex.

JGalt. You should check things out before you jump to the conclusion that all problems in Canada were the result of the Conservative Government.

The current law on prostitution in Canada was introduced in 2014 in response to Canada (AG) versus Bedford ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada which found to be unconstitutional the laws prohibiting brothels, public communication for the purpose of prostitution, and living on the profits of prostitution.

The court gave Parliament (which would include the Liberals and NDP) 12 months to rewrite prostitution laws.

Amending legislation came into effect Dec 6/14 which made the purchase of sexual services illegal.

So there you have it. Another Urban legend about the evils of the Conservatives gone up in smoke.

Nice little deflection pal . Except Stevie would even consult his own MPs never mind other parties . The party of ONE is a good read on how he operated .

I know that this news is going to spoil your weekend Atalost, but this just in today from the CBC……

Liberal fiscal plans less transparent than under Harper, Kevin Page says

Canada’s former parliamentary budget officer says the Liberal government is even less transparent on fiscal matters than the Conservative government it succeeded.

“I don’t think it is [more transparent]. The documents — they’re not better from a government that promised to be better, more transparent … there’s no more information, perhaps even less information, than what we got from the previous government,” Kevin Page said in an interview CBC Radio’s The House.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the transparency yet,” he said.

Page, who frequently squared off with the previous Conservative government over their fiscal secrecy, says his concerns about transparency stem from a lack clarity around the deficit figure.

Lack of Transparency? With a Liberal Government? From Justin?

      Say it isn’t so!

So now CBC is credible ? Before Stevie got turfed CBC had no credibility in your view . So I guess I’ll have to join in the name game with you . Hart goof should fit you really well .

Well, Atalost, there are always two sides to an issue and unlike you, I try to gather information from both sides of the fence before I make a decision or come to a conclusion!

      Have a great weekend!

Sure you do Hart Guy. You spend so much time reading and researching that you post an unrelated comment about federal fiscal transparency in a story about cracking down on local prostitution. That’s some quality information gathering right there.

What you need in PG is more churches to educate those sinners.
Cheers

Is that how come the game isn’t played in Abby ?

More C’s …and who’s gawd is gonna fix this?? read yer bible its been round that long, even be4 you…retarded…

It’s cute, reading all the comments from the creepers (above) who are actually the “johns” cruising Queensway/20th.

An interesting comment sunshine.north, so if you can assume all of us who are commenting on this discussion thread are clients of the services being discussed, would it not be fair for the rest of us to assume you would be the supplier of said services?

Legalize and tax prostitution, can we stop living in the stone age?

Legalize and tax prostitution, can we stop living in the stone age?

In case you haven’t noticed, we are in the midst of an invigorated Christian Sharia law initiative by our governments at most levels. Political correctness is on the way out only to be replaced by the new order.

The Liberals have a majority Government, and they along with the NDP voted against or abstained from voting on Bill C-36. Prostitution Act.

So lets see what the Liberals will do. My guess is it will be the same as C-51. Go ahead and use the legislation.

Ataloss. Perhaps you (with your great knowledge of everything) could explain why the John School etc; as outlined in Krustys post was discontinued in Prince George???

We wait with bated breath for your elucidation on this issue.

To balance the budget on the back of social justice and everything that is good for society as a whole . And because it had the word school in it . We know she’s education averse . First place she cuts is schools because kids don’t vote and teachers don’t vote for her because of her duck dynasty mentality .

#airchristy imperial premier syndrome at its best .

      you mean better than harper’s?

Good one Ataloss….2 points fo you!

That is easy. When Johns were sent there, they discovered that there had been a misunderstanding by the Society of exactly what a John school was.

The Society set up encounter groups to get men to stop peeing in dark alleys and using Johns instead.

    Anyone named John on here?

gopg2015’s explanation has a VERY long shot of being correct. Ataloss’s explanation has no chance at all.

gopg2015’s explanation, however, has an excellent chance of being a tongue-in-cheek remark and the thumbs up have an excellent chance of being clicked by those who got it …. :-)

It is interesting to compare what appears to be a position taken by the RCMP in PG and the police in other jurisdictions in Canada, especially large municipalities.

Here is the position of the Vancouver police stated just before the law cam into effect in December of 2014.

“Canada’s new prostitution law won’t change policing priorities in Vancouver”

straight.com/news/348976/canadas-new-prostitution-law-wont-change-policing-priorities-vancouver

Of the ones I read, this seems to be the most common reaction. Have not found any case law in Canada yet. If there is any, it would be in lower courts since the law is relatively new. Perhaps someone on here has.

Prostitution is called the oldest profession in the world. If it is openly persecuted it always goes underground. Does it ever go away altogether? No, of course not. Instead of pretending that it does not exist, thereby expecting it to go away is the wrong approach. Many countries have dealt with this uncomfortable reality in a much more mature manner than Canada. It appears that we still have some attachment to Victorian customs.

Why are they called Johns where did they get that name from, they should be called DMs desperate men, why would a man want to risk his reputation and health and the health of maybe a partner for a few moments of satisfaction. The neighbours notice when they are driving around and around looking for prey, no one wants them in their neighbourhood, the police need to take action. The police still want us to call in their plate numbers. All neighbourhoods need to be safe and having Prostitution in it makes it unsafe for everyone as it draws in the wrong crowd.

John and Jane Doe are typically placeholders for an unknown person or person whole identity must be withheld.

Seems John is used because it is a common English name. Perhaps Dicks should be used instead. Then again that seems to have been reserved for police detectives, likely from Dick Tracy fame.

Which then leaves the question of why is a toilet called a John.

John Harrington made the first flush toilet in the late 1500s. Harrington was probably too long to use. :-)

“why would a man want to risk his reputation and health and the health of maybe a partner for a few moments of satisfaction”

I could ask the same question about the ladies involved in providing the service.

Then there is this new phenomenon of the increase in women paying a male for a few moments of satisfaction. One of the explanations for that is they do not want to make any commitments, even for a short period of time, and rather seal it with a contract rather than complicated expectations from the other party.

This is life. There are all sorts of arrangements which some would never enter into while others do.

I live on 20th Ave and the prostitution problem is appalling. The police are no help as they have chastised me for reporting the solicitation of sex in front of my own house. Any licence plate I have reported comes back as invalid so I just chase them off myself now. My personal safety has been threatened by the prostitutes as well as the Johns. My 2 year old daughter and myself were exposed to by a John last summer. Called the police to no avail. Prostitute fighting with boyfriend in front of my house over $50 worth of dope..screaming she makes $1000 a night so she doesn’t need him…wish I could make $1000 at my job and not pay taxes. I own my own home, I work full time and pay my taxes yet they have more rights then me..where is the justice?? they have taken over and they are being enabled by the the label of “victims of human trafficking” I have no sympathy

Maybe there is a relationship between the crack down on “Johns” and incidences along the “Highways of Tears”.I much rather have Johns pay prostitutes than cruising the streets and preying on young women.

What crack down on the “johns”?? The Highway of Tears and Prostitution ?? You take a BIG chance when you get into a truck or a car with a stranger. A few years back there was a young Mother working at the Motel on Queensway and had finished her shift and was crossing the street and was hit by a John in a big hurry after his pick up. The young Mother trying to make a living suffered in the Hospital for about two weeks then died. This the reason Prostitution has to been taken out of Residential Areas and put some place else, it effects innocent people .
