Is it Radon Kit Return Time?
Prince George, B.C.- It has been three months since Radon Awareness month wrapped up in Prince George, and it may be time to return the testing kits for analysis.
Winter is the best time of year to test your home or business for radon levels, and typically, the long term tests are done over a three month period. During November, the City of Prince George was offering long term test kits at a reduced price to Prince George residents. Other kits were also made available through the BC Lung Association and Northern Health.
If you bought your radon kit from a Northern Health facility, drop it off at your local health unit and Northern Health will ship it for you. If you purchased it from radonaware.ca or another source, please follow the shipping instructions on the package.
Once you receive your results, a Northern Health Environmental Health Officer would be pleased to discuss follow up options.
Radon is a radioactive, invisible, odourless gas that can seep into your home through cracks in floors, walls and foundations. You can’t see, smell or taste radon. But when radon seeps into a closed-in space like a house, it can be harmful. This is why it is important for people to test homes and businesses so that they know if radon levels could be harmful.
Should the test results indicate higher than acceptable levels of radon, a certified radon mitigation specialist should be hired to correct the problem. The cost to mitigate radon typically ranges between $1,500 and $3,000, depending on the home.
