Lheidli T’enneh Set Dates for 2nd Vote on Treaty
Prince George, B.C.- The Lheidli T’enneh have set aside a week in October to have a new vote on the Treaty that was rejected nearly 10 years ago.
The Lheidli T’enneh will conduct a vote between October 15th and October 22nd at 4 different locations in the province, as well as accepting mail in ballots
It was 2007 when the treaty was put to a vote, and was rejected by 52% of the 233 who cast ballots. The process at that time called for approval of 70% of eligible voters in order to pass.
The Final Agreement which was put to the membership in that March 2007 vote would have provided the Lheidli T’enneh with nearly 4,300 hectares of treaty land ( including some within the Prince George City limits) a cash component of $27 million dollars (indexed to inflation) revenue sharing and fishing rights in addition to self governance.
Here are the dates times and locations for the vote:
- October 15, 2016 — Vancouver Native Friendship Centre — 1607 E Hastings St. Vancouver, BC
- October 18, 2016 — Crest Hotel, Prince Rupert, BC
- October 21, 2016 — Lheidli T’enneh Administration Office — 1041 Whenun Rd, Prince George, BC
- October 22, 2016 — Coast Inn of the North, Prince George, BC
Polls will be open on each date from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm PST and mail-in ballots will be sent out no later than 30 days before the first vote date.
The final count of all ballots will take place on October 22nd after the polls have closed at the Coast Inn of the North in Prince George.
