Internet and Social Media Expert to Speak in PG

Thursday, April 7, 2016 @ 5:50 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Parents concerned about what their children are doing online will want to attend a special presentation next week.

Darren Laur is a recently retired staff sergeant with the Victoria Police Department and an online/offline safety education specialist.

He’s being brought in by the Prince George District Parent Advisory Council (PGD PAC) and will speak at Vanier Hall April 14.

Laur says his talk will focus on keeping your kids safer online and how to maintain a good ‘digital footprint.’

“How what they’re doing online today can come back and haunt them later on when they try to get into a college, university or even a job,” he says.

“And why it’s so important kids understand that their digital reputation matters today and how they can leverage social media to work for them rather than against them.”

After all Laur says, everything we do online is permanent.

“It’s permanent, it’s searchable, it’s exploitable, and more importantly it’s for sale,” he says.

“One of the biggest fallacies online, no matter if you’re in a social network or using an app, and no matter what your privacy settings, people think there is this thing called privacy and there really isn’t.”
