A Crosswalk with Pride
Monday, April 11, 2016 @ 6:35 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Council for the city of Prince George has approved spending $3,000 to have a crosswalk painted in the rainbow colours to celebrate Pride.
The crosswalk colouring is more expensive because crosswalk paint doesn’t come in tintable colours.
(at right, a simulation of what the Pride crosswalk will look like- image courtesy city of prince George )
A new method of using a plastic to adhere to the road surface will be used.
The Pride crosswalk will be installed at one of the George Street crossings near City Hall .

I have 2 questions:
Will there be consideration granted at the request of other special interest minority groups?
(like the league of red headed step children for example)
On a more serious note; will this plastic material they plan to use to mark a cross walk be slippery in the rain?
Something to consider for the league of two wheeled conveyance operators.
metalman.
You are right. The plastic is very slippery when wet.
Heard the Red hat ladies would like a painted crosswalk too!
We have nothing better to spend our money on? What a joke, please
Will this be environmentally friendly plastic? Can’t have environmental unfriendly lines on the road but can go all in for vote buying.
And if I ask for a “yellow brick road”?,,, I would settle for yellow road lines that last an entire year!
In all seriousness, why not make all the crosswalks rainbow colours? They would stand out much better than the current crossings and show more than just a token tribute to the pride movement. Maybe the plasticized paint will last longer too.
At 3,000.00 per crosswalk the city taxpayer will go broke
Only one crosswalk is being done.
Yes but my response was to the comment by watchdog “why not make all the crosswalks rainbow colours?” – answer because at 3,000.00 each that is a huge bill
How about putting down plastic symbols showing a child safe/needle free zone rather than reassuring a primarily adult demographic that they’re safe to walk down the street.
What a stupid idea to waste tax dollars on. Isn’t this against the law to change the standard for road lines?
Why does the gay agenda always have to be in our face in the public space, yet Jesus is outlawed in the public space? It makes no sense why the special treatment for this lifestyle promotion.
Didn’t you know the jesus crosswalk is across the Fraser between the railroad and Yellowhead bridges. City is in the process of finding a suitable paint:D
FYI it is not a lifestyle but a matter of birth. If you want to talk lifestyle then a parent ramming a 2000 year old work of fiction down a kid’s throat before they can decide for theselves is a lifestyle choice. You could take three random babies and cram the qu’ran, torah, or bible in their little heads and it would not matter one iota what their birth parents religion was.
I think the crosswalk is just a token gesture and the location is not exactly high profile. The money would be better spent on something like pink tee shirt day to help the young kids become more accepting of people who are different than themselves. The Vancouver Giants bring thousands of kids to a hockey game and stop the game for a flash mob dance.
Your way of thinking is what can be found way south in rense/duke territory where the blame for most everything lies at the feet of the blacks, gays and jews.
Sparrow you are my new hero. Exactly my thoughts !!!
Will there be consideration granted at the request of other special interest minority groups?
=====================
You mean like how the city subsidizes ice arenas so adult men with good paying jobs can play cheap hockey? Yes, stuff like that will continue.
Shhh…common sense has no place here.
Only adult men get to use the ice rinks? I did not know that.
So in your world admission cost to public facilities should be based on gender and income? Did not these people also pay taxes for these facilities?
No, adult men are a special interest minority group.
Are you saying there will be restrictions on who can use this crosswalk?
What about the Natives? Don’t they get something to commemorate them too? I would put them way ahead of this ‘special’ interest and favour seeking group.
We renamed Fort George Park.
Just another distraction that will cause accidents.
As we speak Neil Godbout is penning another award winning editorial on how opposition to this is based on homophobia and not financial reasons or common sense. Worked for him last time ……
. . . . and he was right the last time.
You know who is right in a democracy …. the majority !!
diazamo states; “You know who is right in a democracy … the majority”
What duazamo describes is tyranny by majority. In a true democratic society the minority’s rights must be protected no matter how singular or alienated that minority is from the majority society; otherwise, the majority’s rights lose their meaning. The majority has an obligation to protect minority rights, it is an essential part of the democratic process, and further defines us as a “civilized” society.
I heard they were going to put one on the Hart.
What a senseless waste of money. Do they not have their own flag now. Do we paint one outside wall of the CN center next? IMO take the $3000 and drop it off at the food bank where it is needed because this crosswalk is not needed.
Do”they” not have their own flag? You’re a ridiculous person.
REMINDER: The Gay Pride Rainbow Flag ONLY has 6 Colours.
The Picture above is wrong. Picture above has 7 colours–Reg. Rainbow.
Top to Bottom Colours are.
RED,ORANGE,YELLOW,GREEN,BLUE,PURPLE.
How about a very bright orange or yellow cross walk with a distinctive warning sign common to all cross walks in the city. Make them all the same.

Lets see who is ridiculous. Ridiculous—-Does he wear those ridiculous clothes to draw attention? Its ridiculous paint the crosswalks a rainbow color that is not needed to draw attention.
The cross walk markings are for safety not a silly statement. In the photo it looks like some kids had a go at the street with their chalk.
I guess they City will have to support and stand behind all groups and do themed crosswalks all over the City.
Bowling pin crosswalk in front of the bowling alley. Hockey sticks in from of the Coliseum and CN Center. Maybe some wine or beer bottles in front of the liquor stores? Maybe owners of businesses will pay the City to be allowed to put their own ideas down on the pavement to promote their company. At least we can then offset the costs of water runoff.
North Carolina passes a religious freedom bill allowing christians to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community, and PayPal pulls over 400 jobs. Singers Brian Adams and Bruce Springteen cancel their perfomances.
Georgia entertains the idea of passing a similar bill and Disney, The Walking Dead, among many other movies and TV series are threatening to pull production out of Georgia.
Get the picture? Violating human rights will not be tolerated. The whole idea that freedom of religion should be allowed so that it can be used to restrict and punish the rights and freedom of another group in our society is both bizarre and hypocritical to say the least.
My great grandfather came on a leaky boat from Scotland had to suffer waves, wales, wind, water and other people and a lot of unspeakable things , Now I want a park named after him with a Tartan cross walk and no one working will be allowed to walk on it unless thy are barefoot and pregnant, Now that is just how stupid this goofy crap is.
What is wrong with Wales..I have lived in Wales and it is a beautiful land.
What is this suffering you speak of? This is an outrage. Madame it is you that is truly goofy!
……
back to the real world, 3K does sound hefty, but if it works could this be a cheaper pothole fixer?
You’re here, you’re queer, we get it! What do you want a parade? Oh, wait…never mind.
