Prince George, B.C. – If you have diabetes and are having trouble motivating yourself to get out and get fit there’s a free program starting today that may help inspire you.

“Walk and Talk” is an 8 to 10 week activity based program for diabetes self-management and prevention.diabetes

“There are certain things that helps those with diabetes live well, one of them is taking care of their nutrition and the other is physical activity,” says Boyanne Young, northern region branch coordinator for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“For a lot of people the physical activity piece is difficult. Lots of times you are living alone and you don’t want to walk by yourself, you don’t know where to walk, it’s hard to get motivated sometimes.”

She’s says that’s where ‘Walk and Talk’ comes in.

“So people will come to the walk and we walk the trails in and around Prince George. We start with a short presentation by maybe a healthcare professional, a pharmacist, somebody who could tell us how to walk safely. And then we all go walking together and it usually lasts 30-40 minutes.”

Young says the fun starts this Saturday at 10:00 p.m. when participants will meet at the College Heights Community Centre.

You can call her at 250-561-9284 or email her at boyanne.young@diabetes.ca for more information.
