Prince George, B.C. – The Canadian Home Builders’ are expecting record crowds at this weekend’s 30th annual Northern BC Home & Garden Show.

Executive officer Terri McConnachie says she’s hoping 15,000 people will walk through the doors over the course of the three day event.

“That would be a record. Last year we had almost 12,000,” she says, adding they’re expecting visitors from across the North. “Absolutely, we invite people from all over to come and hang out with us on the weekend.”

For those who do attend, McConnachie says there will be plenty to do and see.

“There’s about 130 vendors. There’s builders, renovators, roofers, siders, landscapers, kitchen and bath design experts, paving, build your own garage, all kinds of stuff.”

‘Ask an Expert’ is back offering free advice along with the Rona ‘Cutthroat Construction’ competition where builders vie for supremacy with an on-site build of homes. The projects will be auctioned off on Sunday.

McConachie says the ‘Ugly Stove’ contest should also be lots of fun.

“That is amazing, there’s some really ugly stoves out there and there doesn’t have to be so the prize for the ugliest stove is going to be determined by viewers choice.”

Located in the Kin Centres at Exhibition Park, doors open today at 3:00 p.m.

Could someone tell me why anybody in their right mind would pay to see vendors? Its like paying a cover charge to Home Depot.

Well, I guess it is because we have a chance to meet other business and not just home depot. I guess it is also because we can run into old friends and some new ones without having to rush.

It is always an interesting time at the home show. Have you ever gone? Maybe not, if not too bad for you.

Just like TV, you pay to watch someone try to convince you to buy their stuff.
I stopped going when it turned into a freeforall for soap sellers, candy sellers and just about everything other than building venders.

Ditto. Paying just so pushy salespeople can try to con me into buying their wares isn’t something I want to pay for.

Tom, it’s like paying to see a whole wack of commercials, that’s why I don’t go. You can see it all online these days.

It’s the same thing over and over again year in and year out. If you were there 5 years ago, you’d see the same stuff this year. And I only need to see so many hot tubs to determine that I don’t want a hot tub. Should be called the Spa Show.

Shhhhh… she is posing in front of a tub in the photo above. No spoilers for the people who are going please

It all comes down to what your interests are. Some people see these shows as being interesting, and they get new ideas etc; Others get to see what’s on market these days.

The cost of the tickets I assume goes to offset the cost of putting on the show.

In any event different strokes for different folks. I am sure that this show will be a success, as it has been in the past.

The cost of the ticket goes to subsidizing the vendors who are too cheap to pay an extra couple of hundred dollars to rent a space.

I wonder how come the car dealers do not require an entrance fee for their 2 week extravaganza each year. They repeat, so it must work financially for them.

I totally agree… same vendors as in previous years… Why can’t they get some of the vendors that display at the bigger Home Shows??

are these “experts” people we can go to Rona and Home Depot and talk to for free? What happen with bringing in celebs? would love to see Brian Baumler again, I suppose it is a cost thing.

Comical negativity!! Why don’t you stand in front and ask the 10,000 – 15,000 people who choose to go to this event year after year! At times I love the armchair critics with this sort of ridiculous spewing of nastiness – I get amusement out of it!

Lenny I wasn’t being negative. Do I want to spend 8 bucks for someone to tell me how wonderful their products are, or do I go buy some fertilizer for my garden and find what I need online or in the store without all the hype.
Problem with all the fertilizer at the show, it don’t grow anythang.

I agree. I’ll never pay to see a home show. What an odd way to attract new customers, charge me to see your brand?

If you’ve never been to the home show and are curious, pay the money and go. That way, you’ll never have to consider it again. If you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all. Same old, same old….ad naseum. Rinse, repeat…zzz

For the longest time I thought the posters here were talking about going to a Cougars game, especially when they talk about charging for admission, seeing the same thing over and over and over, and all the hype, etc;.

I can remember watching Hockey back in the 60/70’s and nothing much has changed since then. More teams, and more boring, round and round we go, yaaa Montreal, Yaaa Toronto, Yaaa Vancouver.

Or better still we could watch Tennis until our necks get sore.

As I said, different strokes for different folks.

They forgot about driving on the right side of the road… ohhh yaaaaa we have no lines anymore

For the most part of my life I have done rather than watched.

It is exhilarating to ski down a challenging slope, play squash as well as plying tennis. I tried golf for a few years as well as some curling, boring as hell, even when I was playing rather than watching.

We’ve got 8 reasonable quality tennis courts now next to the golf club. Let’s go play!

Oh my gosh. What happy folks today! I guess in last 30 years nothing has changed at the shows – If you believe the comments. Might be the same companies but I bet the products have changed.

We still used those corded drills don’t we? Them phones with cords, they are supposed to be gaining in use, I heard.

I saw on Star Trek, that screen with people talking to other people, that will never happen in real life, only in the movies.

If you believe things, just might be changing. The show just might have something for you.

Either way, enjoy the weekend. I will!

Wake up PGGUYY, I myself would like to head down there to see what’s out there. Its the fact that I and most people can’t see the reasoning to pay money to listen to a salesperson try and sell us something.
