Early Morning Shooting Forces School Closures in Williams Lake
Williams Lake, B.C. – One person is in police custody following an early morning shooting in Williams Lake.
North District Corporal Dave Tyreman says it occurred at a residence in the 900 block of Western Avenue just after 4:00 a.m.
“This is believed to be a targeted incident as the residence was recently occupied by an individual who claimed to be a local gang member, but the residence is currently occupied by a family with no criminal connections. Fortunately no one was injured in this incident.”
Shortly after officers arrived on scene, he says another shot was heard from an unknown direction.
As a precaution, area schools and the university were closed while local residents were asked to avoid the area. Along with the arrest, Tyreman says police have also seized a firearm.
Since then School District 27 has announced schools in Williams Lake and 150 Mile House will remain closed for the remainder of the day and there will be no bus transportation.
However classes at the Williams Lake campus of Thompson Rivers University will resume at 10:30 this morning.
Any witnesses to the shootings are asked to call police.
