Cullen Concerned Trudeau May Backtrack on Oil Tanker Ban Pledge
Prince George, B.C. – “Dumbfounded.”
The words of Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen amidst reports Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may be backtracking on his pledge to ban tanker traffic on B.C.’s north coast.
“He’s taking something that was very clear – he said clearly, he voted on clearly and was in their (Liberal) platform about banning oil tankers on the north coast and just in the last week has suddenly said well maybe it depends on the oil and depends on the tankers and it depends on what day of the week.”
Cullen warned hints of a weaker moratorium and a potential backtrack on opposition to the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline would be a massive “betrayal” of voters and First Nations.
“This is the opposite of reconciliation, the opposite of leadership, and the opposite of what Canadians voted for on October 19th.”
He shared his views from Haida Gwaii today, a place he calls “ground zero” for the issue and promises to raise his concerns loud and clear once debate in the House of Commons resumes next Monday.
“Trudeau was supposed to be different and we want him to be different and want him to stay true to the things he committed to do not that long ago.”
Cullen’s comments come on the heels of the government’s three-day retreat in Alberta over the weekend where Premier Rachel Notley spoke about the importance of pipelines to her province and the country.

Nathan who ?
Please don’t do it Justin, please be a man of your word who leads a government that has integrity, if you backtrack on this important election promise you and your government will have neither. Don’t let the Oil and Gas Industry run the show in Ottawa, like the Conservatives did. Show us the Liberals are different!!!
Did you really think the liberals were all that green or perhaps Alberta went green ? If you want green you’ll have to suck it up and go Green Party of Canada .
You can’t eat beliefs and ideals.
Porter states; “You can’t eat beliefs and ideals.” You are right… but we can eat wild and farmed salmon, clams, crabs, geoduck clams, oysters, sea cucumbers, shrimp and prawns, and sea urchin, hake, rockfish, sole, sablefish, turbot, dogfish, ling cod, pollock and halibut, herring, herring row, oolichan, just to mention a few.
All of those sea foods and more, would be wiped out if a loaded super max oil tanker spilled its toxic load off the coast of BC. So now that I listed some of the things we can “eat” that are directly threatened by oil, what part of your pro-oil beliefs and ideals can you eat porter?
Farmed salmon? Who eats that crap?GROSS!
I TRIED to eat a farmed salmon…………once.
Actually farmed salmon is quite good. I really don’t think Grissly or dumbfounded have tried it. Don’t believe all the propaganda against it. It has been farmed on the coast for over thirty years and no documented cases against, just un verifiable innuendo.
A politician lied to get elected? Impossible.
Has Justin suddenly noticed reality and realized that all his spending promises require money??
Well Nathan Who, the voters in Western Canada are pro-jobs and since you guys threw your trades support under the bus you have a real problem now finding support. Perhaps Justin just took away half your support across the country because we do need exports and the tax revenues that accompany sales and construction. And by the way, most first nations in Canada are onside with these mega projects since it provides great opportunities for them as well.
Why can’t you get onside with economic activity that is good for all the people of Canada Nathan? We don’t all share the same pension plan and benefits package you have…
“We Haven’t Seen This Is In Our Lifetimes” – CEO Says “Alberta Is In A Depression”

BS, I was there in 1981
Enbridge would extract Canadian resources with the least possible investment. Same as raw logs. If it’s not economic to refine it in Canada leave it in the ground.
I’m not defending Enbridge, but are you aware that Enbridge does not extract Canadian resources. Enbridge is “an energy delivery company based in Calgary, Canada. It focuses on the transportation, distribution and generation of energy, primarily in North America. As a transporter of energy, Enbridge operates in Canada and the United States, the longest crude oil and liquid hydrocarbons transportation system in the world.”
Other companies are in the business of extraction, Enbridge is not!
Calling Enbridge an extraction company would be like calling CN a forestry company because they transport processed lumber. It’s a small point, but it’s just one of many that provide false information about our Energy Industry!
Hart Guy you are confusing them with facts.
Hart guy. Everyone in this region with grade 3 reading skills knows what “Enbridge” means. The fact you have time to write in to point out that I did not clearly specify that I was referring the the project that headlined under that name speaks loudly of your need for entertainment.
I deeply apologize. If I could edit my comment I would start with “The Enbridge pipline would provide the means to extract Canadian resources with the minimum investment . . .”.
Glad you caught my error.
Grover, you are being overly generous with your comment that everyone in this region with grade 3 reading skills knows what “Enbridge’ means.
I’m afraid that the average person in this region knows less about the oil and gas industry than you might think! This afternoon, I had a very lengthy telephone conversation with an business associate in Calgary who has been in the “oil and gas’ industry for his entire working career. We both commented about the fact that we speak to people about the proposed LNG pipelines and some of them actually think that the pipelines will be carrying something akin to the gasoline that we put in our vehicles. Go figure! I commented that the oil and gas industry needs to do a better job educating the general public about how and what the oil and gas industry does and is! He agreed with me!
Just last week, I had a long telephone conversation with a business associate in Montreal who wasn’t aware that Western Canada has basically only one customer for our oil and that is the United States. He wasn’t even aware that Eastern Canada imports oil from the United States and by oil tankers from other countries including Venezuela and Saudi Arabia!
Grover, the average person might be less informed than you think they are!

EQUALS = Hart Guy is much smarter than average.
I was just trying to make a point about our natural resources.
Grover, I attempted to put my comments forward without attacking you and without being trying to be condescending!
I do not consider myself to be much smarter than average! I do however, consider myself to be more informed than average.
I am abundantly aware that there are undoubtedly some things that I am more knowledgeable about than you are, but at the same time I am sure that there are some things that you are more knowledgeable about than I am.
I subscribe to the belief that we are know a little about a lot, and a lot about a little!
You made a comment and I simply added some clarification to it! Perhaps you should ask yourself why it is that you might take offence to that!
Remember John Chretian/Paul Martin and the Red Book of Liberal promise’s . Well they threw that out the window shortly after they were elected.
The Liberals both Provincial and Federal promise you everything under the sun to get elected and then do what ever the hell they please. That’s basically what Trudeau is doing. Arms sales to Saudi Arabia goes forward. Bill C-51 alive and well. CF 35 still in the game. Now backing away from Oil Freighters on the West Coast, and yet to come, allowing oil pipelines to East and West Coast.
So, so much for election promise’s.
Anyone ever wonder why Trudeau was allowed to become the leader of the Liberal party, with little or no opposition??? Perhaps he is merely a front for the big boys in the back room. We know that he has very little if any power, anywhere in Canada, and is basically running on his (so called) good looks, long hair, and his daddy’s rep.
Ever notice the dear leader’s puppet strings? Sorry folks but I told you so when he hopscotched into the ring that there would be no change in the change. Also folks, notice how he always evades questions, always, unless orchestrated. When ever Harper did that the liberal maniacs would come unglued.
By the way freights have been using the Douglas Channel for over 60 years without an incident that I can find. The tankers will actually be much safer than the freighters now using the channel.
Queen of the North less than ten years ago….
Queen of the North a whole different situation. Not under direct radar control, no pilot on board, traveling much faster than a tanker, not double hulled, not traveling with two tugs.
Eagleone, please don’t use facts..it upsets seamutt fantasies.
Pval I see you are unable to refute my facts so then having to resort to some mindless statement.
So if all you “Con”sorts thought that nothing was going to change, why the big fuss when Trudeau was elected?
It was hordes like you that thought there was going to be a change, in what I did not understand, but whatever. So as predicted by us cons, no so called change, but you all got conned. Why do you think the dear leader always has a smirk on his face, he and his handlers still cannot believe how easy it was to pull off the con but his con is unraveling faster than I thought it would.
Governments lose elections for a reason or an accumulation of many reasons. Rather than whine and complain the losers should do some mea culpa. I am very glad that our democratic system allowed frustrated voters to punish one government and replace it with another one. We had that option, fortunately!
