Prince George, B.C.  – Prince George merchant Normand Canuel is stepping up to help those affected by the wildfire that has ravaged Fort McMurray.

“I own both Norcan Consulting and Tops and Bottoms Garments and our plan is to donate 25% of our gross receipts this week from Tops and Bottoms to the fire department in Fort McMurray and Norcan Consulting will match that donation.”

He’s encouraging other business owners in town to do the same noting both he and wife Susanne wanted to do something after watching all of the disturbing images of people losing their homes, their belongings and in some cases their jobs.

“Hopefully more people and businesses donate what they can to help out the situation in Fort Mac, it could be us.”

The hardships facing Fort McMurray residents has clearly struck a chord with British Columbians in general.

On Monday B.C.’s Liquor Distribution Branch announced that in just five days liquor stores across the province had raised close to a quarter of a million dollars for Fort McMurray relief efforts.

Red cross collected 54 million so far and the Govt is matching that. Since 80,00 evacuated and this money is for them, maybe make them all millionairs and give each a million since 108 million will be collected… Just a thought

It works out to 1350.00 per person. 108,000,000/80,000.

But, not all of those people will need help. Ironically the ones whose houses did burn, will be entitled to temporary relocation costs, content costs, new house – from their insurer. The people who will need help will be those whose houses are still standing, and the lower income worker’s who don’t have a line of credit to draw on. So it’s a good chunk of cash, if the Red Cross passes it all along.

I’ve also read that Shiraz Restaurant and Margo’s Cafe are contributing a percentage of proceeds as well. It’s good to live in a civilized country!

One country, one nationality. CANADIAN.

Give, it could be your turn to be receiving next week.

I wonder how much of the money actually filters down from the Red Cross.
they have a lot of employees who are unionized. So if we donate 50 million? How much gets to the people in need?

So do you have a better organization to donate to? I was told that the Federal Government will match donations to Red Cross. They are well known world wide as one of the first to help people in need.

A good question, and one we should not be afraid to ask.
I’d like to know the answer.
What percentage of Red Cross income goes to cover overhead?
    metalman.
