Prince George, B.C. – If you’re not online and haven’t filled out the census yet the Prince George Public Library can help.

Both the Bob Harkins Branch and the Nechako Branch offer free internet service.

“The library is all about giving people access to information and ideas and this is one of those things,” says communications coordinator Amy Dhanjal. “So if you don’t have a computer at home and you want to be able to complete the census, then you can come to the library and do it. It’s free.”

She says all you need is a library card or an internet access card.

“Internet access cards are for people who maybe don’t have a permanent address or who have maybe not a great standing on their account with the library.”

Dhanjal says library and internet access cards are available at the circulation desk and allow for up to two hours of free internet per day.

Today of course is Census Day and it is mandatory to complete the form. According to Statistics Canada 5.7 million Canadians had done so by 11 a.m. this morning.

And as Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall told 250News earlier today, it’s very important.

“The census does more than just tell us how many people live in Prince George,” said Hall. “It is a key piece of information the Province and federal government look to when it comes to payments to the various cities across the country because it’s population based.”

I filled mine out today, what a load of crap. First off, they asked who lived in my home. I answered me and nobody else. After six stupid questions about other people living with me, which I had answered in the first question, they asked about a common law partner. What a total waste of time…..grrrrr

My sentiments exactly, taxinapothole. They asked what was my occupation. I answered ‘business manager’. Then below, what that involves. I put down ‘still managing, (barely)’. Surely most of the information asked for is already known to them, and what real importance could it be anyways? The ONLY real statistics that should be of vital concern to government is our total national Production and how much of it we’re financially able to Consume from the total incomes distributed to us in its making. I’ll bet you right now that if THOSE figures were known they’d never see light of day!

Lots of questions to determine if you lived in a straight, gay or lesbian relationship I thought.

ANy thoughts about maybe the government sent out this census to be done on line and then have very few people on the phones to send out the paper census may have been so they could collect fines of $500????
I wouldn’t put it beyond them.

We find it quite concerning that the workers delivering the questionnaires are instructed to leave one on every residents whether the place is occupied at the time or not. seeing these draped over gates is just a flag for the low life’s to break and enter.

Gentlemen, Ladies. Census is not a new thing. it has been happening for milleniums. Romans in there heydays did it.

The governing governments need statistics to determine what is happening in the population. This is for our own benefits, it helps them decide on government policies. Otherwise governments need to work off of old data which is not reflective of what is going on today.

The government can send out hundred and thousands of people out to do this, but that would mean, you will have to be at your home when they visit. And how much will that cost us to pay these people. We had the long form, it took us an hour. One stinken hour in 5 years, to give the information that our government needs to provide them the data for their policies.

I know a lot of people think it is an enfringement of privacy, etc. Well, if they really want to know, they already know who you are and where you live and all that. They want you to confirm the information is accurate.
