Prince George, B.C. – It was the moment members of the Spruce City Wildlife Association (SCWA) had been waiting for.
Last night they officially reopened their long dormant fish hatchery on River Road when fish culturists with the Freshwater Fisheries of B.C. dropped off 100 Rainbow Trout.
“Tonight’s the big night,” said SWCA director Dustin Snyder. “And from here what we’re hoping to do is put as many kids, adults, families, old folks, anybody who wants to come down, put them through here on a tour, show them the fish up close and personal so they can build that connection.”
It’s been a good 10 years or so since the club has put on any tours and he noted interest is high.
“Within the first 30 days of having these fish I can promise you we should be able to put close to 500 kids through and we haven’t really advertised yet.”
Snyder said they hope to continue the momentum and bring in some salmon this fall.
“It’s like the BC Wildlife Federation says, we want less Xboxes and more tackle boxes.”

Love this good news story!
In a previous 250news article; President Jim Glaicar states; “You know the Nechako on some of the runs is quite healthy, so we would love to see our hatchery back to where it used to be but we’re going to have to work through all the steps at the federal level to do that. And we’re willing to do that and have the guys to do it.”
Not to worry Jim, more funding and help is on the way. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is on a recruitment blitz to hire 135 research scientists, biologists, oceanographers and technicians in its largest single recruitment toward restoring ocean science. Sure is nice to have Canada back!!!

I just read some “bad” news JGalt!
Apparently, Justin (your hero) is revisiting the Fisheries and Oceans Canada budget, looking for cost savings and efficiencies. He is reportedly looking to free up more tax dollars to hire more staff to help out his poor over-worked and stressed out wife, Princess Sophie!
“Grégoire Trudeau has one staffer now, but told Quebec City’s Le Soleil earlier this week that she needs a team to help her serve people.
“I want to be everywhere, but I can’t,” she told the newspaper, adding she has three children and a husband who is prime minister. “I need help. I need a team to help me serve people.”
Poor Sophie! She probably has to polish her own tiara! How embarrassing for her!
Did the Spruce City Wildlife Association have to go through proper re-zoning?
Thankfully they were able to bypass this Council. Good on them for doing this ..yes tackle boxes are much better than Xboxes!
This is a good news story!
Kids love these type of field trips and it makes them more aware of the environment in which they live. Spruce City Wildlife has enjoyed a resurgence in membership which is showing benefits throughout the community, think garbage clean up on LC Gunn and now the hatchery is open to kids again.
Keep up the good work. Those who appreciate the outdoors take care of it.
