School District Hosts Budget Meeting
Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George School Board will meet for a special public board meeting tonight.
Trustees will gather to consider the first two readings of its 2016/17 annual budget bylaw.
This year’s operating budget totals just over $129 million dollars – approximately $110 million is made up of salaries and benefits, the remaining amount ($19,197,635) services and supplies.
Trustees are facing a budget challenge of $1,060,000 this year which means trustees have some tough decisions ahead of them.
“We had an in-camera finance meeting and we came up with some solutions to address that and that’s what’ll come up tonight,” said Board Chair Tony Cable.
If the first two bylaw readings pass tonight, the final and third reading of the bylaw will be given at its next meeting on May 31st
According to provincial law, the budget must be passed by June 30th.
The meeting gets underway at 7:00 p.m.

They have crunched the teacher numbers so why not crunch principal #s,support staff;secretaries to be responsible for 5 schools, BIG…BIG… savings
Private schools are getting 300 million taxpayer money?
Yep. And if you closed all the private schools down the education budget would have to come up with an extra 300 million in operating funds plus build schools for about 70,000 children. Public school get’s 9,000 per kid, private school get’s $4,500 (approx.) If kids go to public school, we gotta pony up the other $4,500 and find somewhere to put them. Right now we manage to get these kids parents to pay the other half through tuition, and pay for the facility as well. Might be a hard pill to swallow, but private schools probably free up money for public schools.
Schools are already there. Private schools, oh wait Christy sends her spawn to one, shows how much she supports public schools.
My kids went to private school, I still paid taxes. Didn’t get a break even though I was sucking less out of the system.
We just need more kids! Im to old to start having them.
Volunteers Needed.
Like Interior Health and Northern Health, School Districts have built a massive bureaucracy that eats away at the very dollars for health care and education. BC ferries is another example, going to safe taxpayer millions but all that’s happening is service is in the tank and we all end up paying more for less. But the bonuses to Crown CEO’s and VPs along with Interior Health and Northern Health just keep rolling out at our expense.
totally 100% agree. Well said!
“– approximately $110 million is made up of salaries and benefits…”
That’s 85% of the whole budget! Hard to believe, but true! A little research shows that massive bureaucracy eats up huge percentages in just about every government department – not much left over to build highways, bridges and other badly needed improvements.
Nice to see that people are beginning to see who the real culprit is when it comes to spending tax dollars. Wages and benefits are the big killer and no one seems to want to take the issue on.
Certainly not any politician, or civil servant, or CEO of a Government entity.
Love watching the 2 little white custodial cars all over town..not working. How about the long Timmy’s and Macdonald’s coffee break for maintenance!
