BC Sending Additional Firefighters to Alberta

Friday, May 27, 2016 @ 2:01 PM

Prince George, B.C. – 80 more firefighting personnel from British Columbia are being sent to Alberta to help battle wildfires in that province.

The four unit crews (79 firefighters) are expected to arrive in Hinton, Alberta on Sunday. After a briefing there the personnel will be deployed to assist with the Horse River wildfire near Fort McMurray. An agency representative will be sent later next week.

This is in addition to the five unit crews (100 firefighters, 40 from the PG Fire Centre), two agency representatives and nine support personnel who were sent there on Wednesday.

According to fire information officer Ryan Turcot, crews can be deployed for up to 19 days but can be recalled at any time should conditions change in B.C.

He says sufficient personnel remain here to respond appropriately to any fire activity including in the Peace region.

250News reported earlier today rain is in the forecast for much of the Peace which has allowed the BC Wildfire Service to scale back the number of personnel deployed there.
