The Prince George Cougars are heading home from their three game road trip with five of six possible points. Saturday night in Calgary the Cougars earned a single point in a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Calgary Hitmen. Jordy Stallard scored 3:32 into overtime on a power play to give the Hitmen their fifth victory of the season and the Cougars their first road loss.

Josh Curtis and Yan Khomenko had goals for the Cougars while Nick McBride made 23 saves in goal. At the other side, Stallard had a goal and an assist and goaltender Cody Porter made 39 saves. Special teams proved to be the difference as Calgary went two-for-five on the power play while the Cougars went zero-for-seven on their chances.

5:58 into the first period Yan Khomenko put the Cougars ahead 1-0 when he skated into the left circle and wired a quick shot past the glove of Porter and in for his fifth of the season. The Cougars took the lead into the first intermission and held an 11-7 shot advantage.

Territorially the Cougars had the edge in the second period as well as they outshot the Hitmen 13-6, but the Cougars were unable to solve Cody Porter despite having four power play chances.

Beck Malenstyn tied the game at 11:24 for Calgary when he stole the puck in the offensive zone and quickly snuck a shot past McBride’s glove and hime for his second of the season. Period two ended with the game tied 1-1 and the shots 24-13 favoring the Cougars.

Early in the third though Calgary went to their third power play and quickly made the Cougars pay when Andrei Grishakov banged home a Jordy Stallard rebound past the left pad of McBride to put Calgary ahead 2-1.

Credit Richard Matvichuk’s Cougars though who stayed resilient, and it paid off at 8:55 of the final period when Josh Curtis snuck into the right circle and beat Cody Porter through the five-hole for his third of the season.

In the end, 60 minutes wasn’t enough and the Cougars and Hitmen would require overtime. The two teams traded chances for the first three minutes of the extra period, but with exactly two minutes remaining in overtime the Hitmen were given their fifth power play opportunity and they ended the game shortly thereafter.

Jordy Stallard ended the game when he one-timed home an Andrei Gishakov pass from the top of the slot and in for his third of the season.

The final shots were 41-26 for the Cougars who with the single point are unbeaten in regulation over their past seven games. Their road record is now 8-0-1-0 and their overall record still remains a league best 13-2-2-0.

Now the Cougars will head home to start a two game home stand which begins Wednesday against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
