Prince George, B.C. – After two years behind the bench, Chad van Diemen is stepping down as head coach of the Prince George Spruce Kings due to family reasons the team announced today.

After missing the playoffs in his first year with the team, Van Diemen’s squad was much improved this past season finishing with a 25-27-4-2 record while pushing first place Wenatchee to six games in the first round of the playoffs.

“Chad did a great job as the head coach of our team,” said Mike Hawes, Spruce Kings general manager. “Chad was someone that I had targeted back in 2015 when we were seeking a new head coach. He brought a lot of passion, commitment and hockey knowledge to the position.”

Adam Maglio, has been promoted from associate coach to head coach of the Spruce Kings

“I’d like to thank the fans for these two years,” said van Diemen. “I’ll cherish it forever. I haven’t made any decision about the future but time will take care of that.”

Taking van Diemen’s place is associate coach Adam Maglio. It will be Maglio’s first head coaching job in the BCHL.

“It was an absolute no-brainer for me. As soon as I became aware of the situation with Chad I immediately knew who I wanted to be our next head coach. Adam is an incredibly prepared, organized and committed person who I would say is one of the best young and progressive coaches in junior A hockey,” said Hawes.

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity,” added Maglio. “I’d like to thank the Spruce Kings and I’m eager to get this next season underway.”
