High Streamflow Advisories Issued
Prince George, B.C.- The River Forecast Centre has issued a number of high streamflow advisories for the Interior and the North East.
The heavy rainfall, and predicted “prolonged rain event” are behind the issuing of high streamflow advisories for:
- Bulkley River including small streams and tributaries around Houston, Telkwa, Smithers and surrounding areas
- North-east BC including small streams and rivers
- Peace Region including small streams and rivers around Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Fort St. John, Hudson’s Hope and surrounding areas
A prolonged rain event is forecast for north-east BC over the late-Thursday through Sunday period. Current weather forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada indicate the potential for rainfall totals in the 50 to 90 mm range in the North East and Peace regions, and 40-60mm in the Bulkley River area .
Snow melt is also contributing to streamflow in these areas.
Rivers in both regions are expected to respond to the combined rainfall and snowmelt, with rising flows starting tonight , and potentially extending into Saturday or Sunday. With current rainfall forecasts and snowmelt, there is the potential for moderate flooding from this event.
