City Backs Restoring Funding for ABE

Monday, May 15, 2017 @ 6:34 PM

Prince George, B.C.- ‘Don’t Close the Doors’.  That’s the name of a campaign  that is aimed at getting funding  restored for Adult Basic Education.

The BC  Students Federation  called on City Council for support   to press the Provincial Government to restore  funding.

“I witness daily people who have not been able to complete their education for a variety  of reasons” said Councillor Murry Krause  who said  people shouldn’t be held back from basic education  because of financial barriers.

The BC Students Federation says  since the funding was cut,   there has been a significant drop in the number of  ABE students at the College of New Caledonia.  They claim  the  drop  is  between 40 and  60  percent.

Council has unanimously supported writing a letter of support , joining  several other communities (including Quesnel)  which have already  done so.

Awesome, I’ll go back to school and upgrade, maybe try to get into nursing or another field if this were to happen.

I’m pretty sure nursing school is not part of the Adult Basic Education program.

      upgrading to meet prerequisites

The drop is 40 or 60% of What.?

The number of people enrolled in ABE at the college. Seems like it might be good program for you too.

now that made me laugh…good one

Get real, high school classes are free, why should taxpayers pay for basic upgrading classes of adults. Many in high school students just do nothing and expect a free pass of 50%, good enough. Many students make these choices in high school. What is worse is when administrators in school districts FORCE teachers to pass students in high school with 45% to 49% because they HAVE to graduate, graduation numbers have to be high and this looks great to the public. Babysitting………
Result is the diploma or dogwood is worthless , not worth the paper it is printed on and most often results in minimum wage employment. There are choices in life, not too much is free. There is NO babysitting in college or university, you pay for courses, no babysitting, no T/A’s, you do the work to high standards or fail. Employers expect the best to pay out the big bucks……………..

I agree with manofsteel, do it in high school people, for free. Now to convince the teenagers to figure out what they want to do in life and get the base done in highschool. Life happens and often people don’t do that or need to change direction. It is ironic that a liberal government is once again re-elected, and they are the ones who cut these programs in the first place. I don’t think there will be much buy in from government to get the funding.

Many parents do not realize the leaving certificate from high school from this school district is an absolutely worthless paper it is printed on. Great babysitting certificate……… Failures of first year student numbers at colleges and universities are extremely high. The babysitting spoon feeding mentally comes to an abrupt halt. Grades,, make a choice, a doctor, an airline pilot graduating with 50% or 90% High school councillors wake up to your failures.
hmmmmmm………..50%

Since when is High School free?

Yes public school is free for those who choose to use it wisely. Just wait until students attend post secondary school, now you really pay and can fail. Many teenagers are just absolutely lazy and have little support from parents and councillors in school. Just go to the high schools here and see how many skip, refuse to do homework and wander the halls in the building always making excuses why they are not in classes.
My children will attend private school where there is discipline, respect, real learning in math, english, sciences, real interest and support from parents. Not garbage courses of just fun times. These parents really pay for education. The Liberals have nothing to do with this, it comes down to attitude of students and parents. Education in China sure better than Canada, this century they will be the world power of the globe. They take education very seriously and are will to work harder than most people…………..

Some great points made out so far in the comments,I wonder do students working part-time while in school do better in life after grad than students who don’t work, you walk through the hallways in some high schools in town here and it looks like a dumpster exploded. like they are taught someone else will pick that up.The cycle continues.
