Local Woman to Receive Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers
Prince George, B.C. – The Lieutenant Governor, Judith Guichon, will be presenting 33 British Columbians with a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers today in a ceremony in Victoria, and a Prince George woman is among the recipients.Cynthia, (Cindy) Smith has been a volunteer in Prince George for over 18 years.
She has given of her time to such organizations as Scouts Canada, St. Vincent de Paul, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Terry Fox Run, in addition to serving as a soccer coach and raising funds for Fort McMurray relief efforts.
The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. As an official Canadian honour, it also pays tribute to the dedication and exemplary commitment of volunteers.
The silver medal (shown at right) is 36 mm in diameter with a suspension ring. One side depicts the Queen, while the other has two interlaced hearts to depict the ideas of caring and generosity.
