Prince George Socked In With Wildfire Smoke
Saturday, August 12, 2017 @ 9:35 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The smoke from wildfires in the Province has blanketed Prince George, and the level of particulates is extremely high.
The provincial target for PM 2.5 is 25 µg/m3. At 9 this evening, the level of PM 2.5 was sitting at 511.9 µg/m3,
The level of PM 10, was siting at 407.5 µg/m3. The provincial target for PM 10 is 50.
The 24 hour rolling average shows level of PM 2.5 is more than 3 times the Provincial target as the 24 hour rolling average was 89.1 for PM 2.5 while the 24 hour rolling average for PM10 was sitting at 92.7.

I looked like the sun had set long before the sun set. The street lights have been on for a while. I hope people are taking it safe and not going outside for too long.
Layman language please.
Maplebud, it’s smoky outside…and those with an IQ greater than 100 should not do much outside activity.
IQs are an attempt at measuring intelligence. It is a controversial measure which is often under attack as to the importance in the success one will likely have in life.
Recent thinking includes that when it comes to success in life, a better predictor is attitude rather than intelligence.
Based on that, people’s core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed.
People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform those with a fixed mindset, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.
In today’s ever increasing complex lives with information overload, even the best educated, knowledgeable and experienced people will have strengths and weaknesses in various aspects of daily information.
Researcher are finding that those who are set in their ways will not do as well as those who are open to new ideas and open to exploring to learn to understand..

Apologies for the duplication of the last two paragraphs. Happens when one uses a wordprocessor to write and edit before pasting it into text boxes on here. :-)
Assuming that maplebud has a low IQ shows you have a poor attitude. ;-)
You can’t have lived in PG for a long time if you have never read about particulate matter and the measures of them.
Here is an easy site which shows the air quality index, a series of numbers from 1 to 10+ where 10 is the highest and 10+ is super high.
PM 2.5 are “aerosols” (liquid or solids) which are 2.5 microns or less in size (basically not visible individually). Basically they can reach the smallest parts of the lung and are thus the most dangerous.
There are instruments which can weigh them. One set is sitting on top of Plaza 400, for instance.
So 511.9 µg/m3, is 511.9 millionths of a gram in a volume of one cubic metre.
PM 10 are particles smaller than 2.5 microns. They cannot reach the smaller parts (alveolae) of the lung. Example road dust fits under that category, as do larger smoke particles.
The instantaneous measure can be at a specific time, while a 24 hour average is the average over a 24 hour period.

The site that you have given also explains the air quality readings. I have used it for years and for those that think Abby has bad air should check it to see the air quality daily.
It was one of the reasons we moved from PG was the poor air quality.
So go for it all you smart ones that try to make me believe that the smell that you think is harmful you better check the PG air quality daily.
Cheers
Shows you are willing to learn something new. Great attitude. ;-)
For all the dummies, lol. ( yep, I needed google to help me understand the diff)
• Particulate matter (PM), also called particle pollution, is a general term for extremely small particles and liquid droplets in the atmosphere
• PM2.5 (fine particles): d ≤ 2.5 m
• PM10 (coarse particles): d
To Quesnel: Guess you’re stayin then!
To: Readsinthedark – Thanks!
Here is another site which might be of interest to some:
ht tp://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/viewer/run/ops/BSC-WC-01/current
It shows a predictive graphical model at one hour intervals of the levels of smoke formation over a map base.
The inputs are fire locations, estimates of tons of materials being burned off each hour, weather info input which affects the movement of smoke plumes.
You can step through one hour at a time.
As with weather forecasts, the model is not perfect and it is in the refinement stages as I understand it.
Are you ever giving us lessons this am for all of us open minded ones.
Cheers
Interesting site. Thanks for that.
Here is the site for the Plaza 400 readings:
ht tp://aqicn.org/city/british-comlumbia/prince-george-plaza-400
Looks like the maximum readings for Sunday PM2.5 (hourly, I believe) was 804 µg/m3 and 888 for PM 10.
I would not be surprised if that was the maximum ever recorded at that location.
It used to be 100 to 200 and maybe even 300 on some days a few decades ago when the City was cleaning the street after the winter and did not water the streets before deploying the sweepers.
It’s all goobley gook to me; and I don’t understand how to get to those ‘sites’ that people have typed in.
Yup, the air is bad, my breathing is affected, and my eyes are sore and watering constantly.
ntkr, just copy the link, ht tp://aqicn.org/city/british-comlumbia/prince-george-plaza-400 to your tool bar and enter. it’ll take you right there.
To reach the sites copy and paste the link into the address bar in your browser. As 250News holds for review any posts with hyperlink most people add a space in the http part as in ht tp, erase this space and link will then work.
“Layman language please.”
Zombie apocalypse. Minus the zombies. :)
I would like to see a list of the measures being taken by the City, Business’s and Citizens of Prince George, to help reduce the bad air situation.
I suggest this would be a very short list.
Its one thing to know the technical terminology of whats killing you. Its another doing something about it.
It reminds me of when doctors used to bleed you as a form of cure, the longer they bled the worse you got, and in some cases people died from the bleeding. At that point the doctor declared that you were to sick to save, and there was nothing more he could have done.
Its a NDP smoke screen don’t let your guard down LOL
no…no the Shambala was in town last night??
Yah we have been living with Christy Crunch with smoke for so long we do need a change.
Cheers
Abby voted liberal, you do have more in common with PG than you hoped.
Ozone is measured in Abby as well as particulate matter, you need more electric cars – talk to Ataloss to make it happen
We also have a few NDP’ers. The Lord is not kind to us atheists.
Cheers
