Prince George, B.C –  The Supreme Court  ruled today that Canfor must now supply chips to the Mackenzie Pulp Mill for an extended period of time to assist them in finding a new buyer.

Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell says the decision by the courts today means that it will improve efforts to find a buyer for the Mackenzie Pulp Mill “Clearly there were issues about fibre supply but the court has now eliminated that concern.”

Minister Bell said he will be watching closely, within a week to 10 days to see if individuals who have been waiting in the wings will now step forward to make offer to buy the mill.

Gee, it must be a new experience for Canfor when things don't go their way.

their roots are gone from that community...till they need the wood and the trucks roll on by...
You kind of gotta wonder if Canfor wasn't hoping the price of the mill would plummet without the chips contract, making it a good deal for them to buy.
I am bit suprised at this ruling, considering the sometimes unseen power that Canfor has in this province!
I am very glad for Mckenzie.
It does leave some light at the end of tunnel for them and we will keep the fingers and toes crossed!
(but I bet Canfor WAS pissed!)
All in all,good news!
I don't understand is where these chips are supposed to come from.

The CANFOR MacKenzie sawmills are closed and the Prince George Pulp mills are scrambling for supply.

It is all very nice for the courts to rule, but isn't practical reality going to pop up?

Frank
It might force them to run the Macenzie sawmill
As far as "practical reality" Canfor shut this Mackenzie sawmill down claiming poor market conditions. It looks like the real reason was to get out of the chip supply contract in order to help manipulate the sale price of the bankrupt P&T pulpmill. Therefore creating a more favoural "practical reality". It appears the judge in this case was able to recognize this "practical reality"
