Prince George, B.C. – The 5th annual Commonwealth Cup kicks off today at Aberdeen Glen Golf Course.
The tournament is a fundraiser that donates all of the proceeds to children's programs at the Exploration Place Science Center and Museum and the Canuck Place Children's Hospice.
 
LA Kings Jason Labarbera, NHL alumni Stew Malgunas, Dennis Kearns, Darcy Rota, John Grisdale, Gerry O’Flaherty, Gerry Monahan and Mayor Colin Kinsley were auctioned off at a VIP sponsor barbeque last night. The highest bidder won the advantage of gaining one of the hockey players for their team.
 
Hole in one prizes include a 2008 Bayliner 185, 2008 Jeep Wrangler 4x4, 2008 Boulevard M50 Motorcycle and a $20,000 lump sum mortgage payment while the putting contest on hole #19 and chipping contest on hole # 20 are worth half the pot of the entire tournament.
 
Commonwealth Mortgage group is thrilled that the tournament continues to grows each year. There are 43 teams registered and they say people are still calling today to inquire about registration.  Although the tournament is sold out, registration information for next year can soon be found on the website www.commonwealthcup.ca.
 
The event will conclude with dinner, entertainment, a silent auction and various prize presentations.

Makes you wonder why the city wants to stay in the golf business when the other six golf courses around town do such a goood job. That new Pine Valley will cost so much it will require taxpayer funding from other golf courses for decades.

I wonder why the city doesn't build a sawmill or a plywood plant or MDF plant? The city doesn't have to play by the normal rules, and we need another wood product facility.


We need a municipal course in the city so the kids without transportation or the money for high green fees can also learn to enjoy the game. How many PG kids learned at Pine Valley?
