Prince George, B.C. - The City of Prince George has started working on a new policy that will change the type of foods and drinks available in recreational facilities. The newly established Active Communities Prince George Committee will champion a municipal nutritional health policy that will encourage active living and healthy eating.
That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get nachos or curly fries at the first hockey game of the season, but you can expect some changes over time.
There will be a price attached to the change to healthier choices, as the City of Prince George does get a percentage of the sales from the vending machines.
If folks don’t want the bottled water or the granola bars, there could be dollars lost. There’s no way at this point to see what the real financial impact will be says Director of Community Services, Tom Madden “It will take some time, perhaps over a two year period or so to see if people will move over to healthier items.”
Madden says the vendors at places like CN Centre have already started making changes in food preparation, reducing the amount of trans fats for example, but there are contracts to be honoured and equipment already in place, so whatever changes the Committee suggests in the policy it develops, will have to be made over time.
The work on the policy is in the information gathering stage. Beer sales are not part of the information gathering session. The Committee hopes to have a draft policy ready for City Council's approval by the end of August.

They shut down the swap shop on Quinn Street and are now collecting motor oil and various items that were already being collected by others like motor oil had to be collected by those who sold it or direct you to someone that was providing that service.
City Hall just has to show us what great services they are giving but are only duplications provided by others. Get on with managing the affairs of our City if you know how.
